does everything that uses ue5 on ps5 take like five minutes to compile shaders every time you open it too. i hate compiling shaders
The relative absence of shader compilation agony is actually one of the biggest advantages PS5 has over other platforms, for example:
ah, too bad it doesnt have any games
PSIII-60
got most of the exclusives and some of the other current gen stuff I wanted to try
controller feels nicer than I expected
also the trees in Wukong are very pretty
Dynasty Warriors Origins is out?!?!
Damn how did i miss that!
gotta hand in my badge etc.pp
It supposedly runs very well even on older PCs, which is why I was hesitant. But I tried on mine and while it looked fine, it crashed after half an hour.
I also read an interview and they said they put as much people on screen as the PS5 could handle, and that kinda sold me. High end PCs probably have more, but it sounded like they at least tried optimizing for PS5.
If anyone wonders about Destruction All Stars, I know it’s not gonna be OnRush, but I wanna try the brief single player arcade mode, and it was cheap.
Here’s some impressions:
Sorry, Dynasty Warriors but I realized quickly that I still don’t care about Musou besides Berserk (and FotNS).
Stellar Blade made me realize I still don’t care about character action games. Also: I find Eve just as unattractive as Bayonetta. Maybe I’m too gay for this. I wish these games had character creation, I’d love to adjust the head size.
Rise of the Ronin allowed me to adjust the head size. It also made me realize I’m too old to play rhythm games. But mercifully, after Perry whooped my ass a dozen times, I was allowed to choose “I’m bad at this” difficulty and I’ve been happily stalking cats since.
I’m bad at Humanity. But I respect a healthy mix of Lemmings and ChuChu Rocket!, even if I find it too laborious.
Black Myth Wukong made me realize that some games can make me care about character action games. Or is it a more linear and forgiving Demon’s Souls? Anyway, I loved butting my head against the big-headed monk in the beginning, farming the area and dying over and over, getting better. I heard this runs bad on PS5 but it’s still the prettiest game I’ve seen.
I never finished a Souls game. Demon’s Souls remake made me realize that I’d much rather try on PS3 again. I remember it being prettier there.
Returnal is so good? I was surprised to see so much story in it, and I was surprised how much it motivated me to play more.
Deathloop is… not so good? For someone like me. Found it to be more mundane in its setting and more outspoken in its narrative delivery than Returnal. FPSs are probably better played on PC anyway.
Destruction AllStars is very much not an OnRush. Maybe if they would’ve asked me, I could’ve told them how to make it a worthwile single player arcade game. Why design all these characters just to not give them a little background story told in beginning and ending cutscenes in a tournament mode like in Street Fighter?
Cygni is okay to look at. Like AI generated art. I’d rather watch someone play it than try failing at it myself.
Astrobot looks like an AI generated Mario Odyssey. I enjoy it, but I can’t forgive the lack of co-op. Makes me feel old and lonely.
Ghostwire Tokyo seems like a more polished Slitterhead. But I think I’d rather clobber weird bio mutant abominations with flesh weapons than zapping ghosts with magic.
Body snatch mechanics are always good fun. Ask Messiah. Or Avenging Spirit. Slitterhead also gets my vote for best level select chill-out music.
Gran Turismo 7 is still downloading over 120GB at the moment…
Two general PS5 observations:
All HDR settings menus are utterly useless. Instead of making me precisely adjust brigthness so certain elements are visible or not, they just make me choose between more or less washed out looking pictures. I just always end up leaving it in the middle.
All performance vs graphics settings are utterly useless. I always have to google what it means. And I never get the ideal setting. I have a 1080p 60Hz TV, just let me choose the resolution and framerate myself, and bump up everything else. How is that so hard? This generation makes me want to play on PC more than the older ones.
i have never once used anything but performance modes on PS5. well, i turn them (quality modes) on to take a screenshot once every few months…
assuming the games would do what older generations did and make the games prettier at the expense of framerate, the settings have major utility for me. i’d love if like, 360 or PS3 games would have let you turn things down to get them running better.
I’d rather have my rays traced.
It you OS set the output to 720p you sometimes could.
The 3D World Sackboy game is a good time
Funny how Astro Bot seems to win people over more and more as they go along, whatever reservations they might have started with. Maybe this will be your experience as well.
As maybe the most mascot platformer sicko on the forum I am ready to grit my teeth and play it when it is less than 4000 yen.
It and Stellar Blade have held their value better than any other ps5 game.
Astro Bot winning game of the year™ and Elon forming DOGE are linked.
I regret writing this. When I write dismissive about games it’s just to justify to myself not spending more time with them. Not sure if that’s worse than the reverse but…
Anyway, GT7. Unsure if I like how guided the career mode feels, might be Stockholm Syndrome but I miss grinding the same beginner race to pimp my used Toyota. Maybe that’s in here somewhere, and I just have to unlock it first. Haven’t even unlocked the ability to sell cars. They added that in an update? Hmm… I like the music!
tbf we did say “ohh that’s cute” a lot when I played and was watched
Out of that stash of games I finished two before selling my PS5 again.
Those two games were:
Astro Bot
Rise of the Ronin
And honestly, I don’t understand why Ronin didn’t win Game of the Year instead. Maybe because it wasn’t nominated? There is so much content in this game, I felt like I was playing two games. Would’ve made sense to roll the credits after the first area and save the rest for a sequel. Where could they even go from here? I just hope they keep going.
