The non-social media web

What other cool websites do u like to go to aside from here that are not things such as twitter and facebook.

I miss how the internet used to be but I don’t know how to not use it like a baby

I used to get a lot of mileage out of reading music forums, but most of the good ones have shut down or slowed down. I Love Music is still decent, but they’re annoyingly gen-x.

Naked Capitalism and associates for current event related stuff. Everything else… uhmmm… I wish there was a link aggregate site that wasn’t Reddit. Naked Capitalism is good because it’s curated. We need more small sites that heavily curate stuff on the web.

MetaFilter is pretty cool as a place to get exposed to random stuff from all subject areas and see generally intelligent old people talk about it. Their big current events political threads are a disaster of professional managerial class liberalism though, but they do have an outspoken socialist contingent too.

Oh and @Mr_Mechanical, it’s a link aggregate site that’s better than reddit!

it is crazy to me that metafilter is still alive and kicking after all these years

and still with such an ugly color scheme

but I guess that does lend it web 2.x authenticity

Certain small subreddits with strong selection biases can be okay.

I read a few Serious Blogs for a Cause like ASAN.

The old form of the internet lives on as podcasts.

having to consume all writing as some 29 year old’s hyena chuckle sucks though

yeah I just do not like podcasts :frowning:

reddit counts as social media imo

It sucks that captions/transcripts are somehow not an expectation even for million dollar independent media.

My venerable RSS feed is still my internet page (I use inoreader ftr) and I daily have at least 150-odd new posts to read, drawn from a slightly curated junkheap games, fashion, now-limping image tumblrs and music and crit blogs that still actually generate RSS, same as I ever have

I could probably delete the dead links but it’s good to know where I’ve been really

The only source in the whole thing that’s owt like a general news page is fucking Boing Boing

Beschizza is still great

that’s still not what I’m after though, I miss actual writing in which people choose their words, not just recorded conversations

I used to read a lot of sites that still exist, but I fell out of the habit. Mainly thinking of www.jacobinmag.com (leftist political site with wildly inconsistent editorial selection)
www.tcj.com (comics site with really great columns, focusing mostly not on superheroes)
www.filfre.net (one dude’s personal blog creating a timeline of narratives in video games with primary sources and decent analyses)

for me it’s a couple webcomics and a language-learning web app and birlinterrupted.tumblr.com
