Every time I see this thread I think of

Also, I just watched Reloaded for the first time and I thought it was a pretty good action movie! I guess I must have a bum eye for special effects because it all looked fine to me. I didn’t notice any frames of ps3-looking Neo flopping around or any of the stuff like that I’ve heard about.

yeah i am i guess famously not good at being able to recognize “good action scenes” but the last time i watched it around when i first made this thread i thought Reloaded held up surprisingly well. I couldn’t finish Revolutions.

Reloaded has some pretty great shot composition and setpieces. The motorway even develops lore in little fun ways like why avoiding motorways is a thing and how agents simultaneously attempt to dispatch exiles as well as humans.

in case anyone else wanted to use this hype time to rewatch Speed Racer on an HD tv like i did, i can confirm that it, in fact, still rules

crazy to think that, even today, this seems like the only (american-made) live action anime adaptation that seems to actually use shot composition & production techniques from anime

rewatched matrix 1 and 2 recently. i noticed that 1 felt quite jumbled and silly for most of its length despite a good starting hook, but really pulled together right before the end with a rapid succession of payoffs (both for the characters and by putting the established “mechanics” into use). it’s easy to see why it generated such an infectious, pop-song energy.

2 would probably be a good movie if you cut 90% of the stakeless kung fu sequences and at least 50% of the monologuing by morpheus, the oracle, the architect and that french-speaking douchebag. i actually want to say the set design and some of the action is better than the first. the machinery of zion, the bunkers and hangars and a number of underground tunnels were all pleasing to the eye. the shot of one of the ghost dudes phasing backward through a windscreen always stood out in my memory. i’m not a fan of superman neo but the climactic rescue was only really ruined by poor editing - too much wallowing in cartoony slow motion that undercut the urgency.

based on my memories and how tired i felt after 2 i probably won’t be getting around to the third any time soon

I watched the first half hour of 3 the other day and I was barely getting through it. Why is the perverted French guy getting this much screen time, who wanted this?

yeah I watched the first one last week for the first time in probably 20 years and thought it was fine, barely, and I continue to be totally bored by this trend of people my age excavating mediocre 2000s properties

speaking of French perverts no one wanted, I also rewatched 2011’s The Kidnapping of Michel Houllebecq which is still the funniest movie ever made, if felix biederman ever sees it no one will hear the end of it so I hope he never does

felt sincere pain seeing people celebrate spec ops the line this year because of the “good politics” so i mean i can see why the matrix movies would seem comparatively heady
even if from memory they all do the very late 90s thing of paying tribute to an idea of the psychedelic without being able to convincingly enact it
hope the jefferson airplane song isn’t just kneejerk trailer literalism since i sort of do find that the most interestingly untimely aspect of these things as time goes on

dog days ran so spec ops: the line could take a whole ass-dragging dump on the shag rug then point at it and demand a gold star from teacher

The third Matrix is good if you relish in watching really, really bad anime.

after rewatching all 3 recently, i can say that 3 is 1/2 Bad Star Wars and 1/2 Decent Anime

not going to lie, watching hyper ridiculous wire fu choreography fights is a lot more fun to revisit than any of the sort of Marvel CG Mouthwash will be in like 20 years

never read this thread before I think. but I recently watched the sequels for the first time (after re watching the first) and absolutely agree with this take.

in an action sense, the first movie is brilliant; the second hs some memorable scenes, and the third hardly. but I do enjoy the look into machine society that we get thru these films

Path of Neo final boss fight is Canon as far as I’m concerned
