The Icoverse and Its Legacy (formerly The Real Last Guardian Topic)

yeah, it’s terminally lame. You can feel the marketing consultants writing the copy… My understanding is that it’s much better in FH3, actually!

oh, I meant the newest one, which I think is 3 :frowning:

right, hell has layers

Yeah, Saint’s Row 3 is pretty great.

The amazing thing with the SR games is how they make so much of the silly bullshit of the modern ubergame tolerable just by being completely upfront about it all being silly bullshit, but trying to make the individual silly bullshit moments fun.

Oh, also by letting me make my gameperson look like whatever the fuck I want and building the story to roll with that.

Yes, I’m amazed how Saints Row 3 and especially 4 take what whould be big no-no’s in game design (collectathons, repetitive side activities, open world of no consequence) and tweak them just enough to make them not just tolerable but fun and engaging.

On paper I should hate these games. In practice they’re among the few open world games I’ve actually finished.

credit the writing and production staff where credit is due, not all games have a robot you can fuck any time at your base, a totally gender-agnostic approach to all dialog, and a reenactment of keith david’s fight scene from they live

Oh most definitely. It is a whole package effort, and I love them for it.

Also probably one of the first games to allow you to have your main character voiced by Troy Baker (as Male 1) AND Nolan North (as Nolan North)

Female 2 forever

Is this still a Last Guardian topic?

I’m having trouble talking about it, because:

  • spoilers

  • It’s pleasures are in subtlety and grandeur and not easily expressed by words
  • it’s communicating something very similar to the other Team Ico games

I love the Nolan North voice for how much it talks about being Nolan North. It’s really pretty hilarious.

I actually never played as a male chara in SR games. I must try it some time.

And with this, I bow out of SR discussion on a Last Guardian Thread.
I admit I felt dirty just posting that screenshot up there. Sorry!

I guess this is already a point of discussion in this thread, from my skimming (will read more later), but I started this last night and just feel like saying that the camera and aiming controls are so awkward and laggy that I’m genuinely offended that this in-no-way-productive piece of software was like $66 after tax*.

Seems interesting otherwise.

I’m already falling in love with Trico. Just wish I could move the camera over to look at it without angrily wondering “how is this acceptable in 2016?”.

*like, fucking hell, thanks to amazon you can now get a tablet for less than this. At least make the camera controls feel finished. I spent my first 20 minutes with this game downloading a 1.6GB update, thinking “oh, maybe this fixes some of those awful control issues I’ve heard about”, but nope.

the camera is pretty bad, but it’s bad because it tries to do some things, i think, not just because it’s shit

anyway, there is a look at trico button, at least!

which isn’t listed in the in-game controller layout, iirc?
In that case, L1 is your friend @sarsamis.
The only thing I am kinda sad about is that the PS4 Harrier is making so much noise that I have to crank up the sound to levels that make it unfeasible to play it at night, because you never know when Trico might make your neighbours think you’re watching a weird movie.

In truth there’s not that much to say about this game. It’s exactly as expected from the trailers and the past stuff Team Ico has done.

Its vision is basically to be an improved version of Ico; it has a pristinely animated beast expressing a wide emotional range, with an AI that’s half prescripted and half chaotically random; and that’s surrounded by filler climbing, non-puzzles and sentimental/dramatic setpieces.
