New Ueda looks really interesting I look forward to playing it when it comes out in time for the PS7.
You can say Astrobot won because of the weaker pool of GotY nominees, but I hope that the tone really helped. The industry as a whole got away from drab browns from the 00s, but it hasn’t really embraced like genuine joyfulness like Astrobot.
Hopefully the Naughty Dog game is fun and full of good feels. It kinda makes me want to go back and play that Guardians of the Galaxy game…
i don’t think i have ever been angrier about a video games related thing when i saw that snake oil salesman in the shitty zelda jacket do a video saying the reason people getting laid off is because they’re bitches who can’t write a resume the right way
to me ‘clover exists again’ is synonymous with ‘your dreams are possible’, ‘love will find you’
i feel sad that the takeaway about astrobot and its ps1 nostalgia cycle is that we are going to see a lot of advocacy for making more games like that when we actually need more tail of the sun. the entirely wrong lesson is being learned here
edit: i assume it is a good game. but if the arguments for why it stands out are that the gameplay goes back to the ‘fun and simple’ ps1 era games it is completely missing the fact that the reasons those games exist is due to drastic changes to labor, funding, and game budget that came around in that generation, switching to cheaper discs. and as far as i see this game makes no categorical improvements to any of those things
Astrobot is fun and simple, but I think only the shallowest takeaway from that all games should be fun and simple.
I have been mulling on the NES shoutout, and to me the most important consoles were the NES and the PS1. Both are tethered to their own hyper capitalist companies, but both were also tentpoles for exciting design.
The Virtua Fighter 6 stream had Jensen Huang and a Saudi prince talk about how happy they are that VF is back. The richest people on the planet heard they were making a new VF and said “Yo can we get in on that?”
I meant to mention this at the time, but what was up with Snoop Dogg’s son? He looked so sad and vacant…

It’s not good (sorry Rudie).
I mean his dad is basically a walking billboard, maybe he’s just unfulfilled
The most important thing to remember about Guardians of the Galaxy is to just crank down the difficulty and enjoy the ride, because the actual shooting and stuff is kinda miserable and the final boss’s bullshit just ramps every con about the gameplay way up.
I’m super fucking cynical about Marvel stuff and enjoyed the story! The combat just irked me.
We had a little hate watch of this last night and I guess it’s nice that Geoff didn’t fucking run anyone off stage while they were eulogizing their staff who had passed. Dunno about having your presenters who got that treatment making jokes about it this year, though. Maybe just go up there and apologize (he would never).
Nothin’ too much grabbing me on this one. Hopefully that Naughty Dog game is so damn expensive they gotta do a PC release soon after. I dunno about all the branding, but the lady with the poofy hair and eye patch…that’s character design to me, baby.
Excited for Virtua Fighter, I guess I’m excited to see what another crack at Okami will be (hopefully it’ll be Okami 4-7 the way Okami was like 1-3 in how it just kept going and going). I don’t think that Game Kitchen Ninja Gaiden was announced there but I’ll try that.
Uhh what else. Ueda game should be neat. That 1910s Yakuza-ish game looks gnarly.
Mostly just a lot of virtually indistinguishable gacha anime stuff, that’s all I really remember.
As for the awards, well:
Regarding Astro Bot winning. I think this is just a year where everything else was just too hard or too long for most people to get through and Astro Bot is the most approachable nominee. I wonder if the real takeaway for developers is to maybe not be as demanding of the player.
What if the new Ueda game is CALLED Silksong?
very disappointed they didn’t announce a new Balan Wonderworld
Yuji Naka, last Tuesday:
What comes after -world… universe, right? Right.
I present to you — Balan Wonderverse

Next meetup, we need to have a Balan session so everyone can see the Wonder.
I’ll bring that copy I won fair and square
Looks like an independent company with the plural apparently being enough
