the framerate line: get on a side

HDR on my projector is generally too dark and less impactful for me personally than the 4K but it is neat

Someone must have done a NES style too many sprites slow down moment in one of these faux retro games.

discernment is both necessary and a curse

I find professionals are best served by developing split minds; at times I’ll play through the lens of a child, at times an exhausted and lonely person, at times a minmaxer

But always, always analyzing

you should see me on mind-altering substances

Yeah the impact of HDR is more about the screen itself. Panels which can show a high color gamut. But also offer better contrast. lower black level AND higher peak brightness. For a lot of TVs, HDR is sometimes a color improvement, but only marginal in the contrast improvements. Due to the limitations of the TV itself. Could be a panel which doesn’t get very bright. Could be a panel which has high brightness, but only ok for the black level.

Some TVs which advertise HDR, aren’t actually HDR. Like there is an actual standard for it. And some TVs just fake it by juicing some image processing parameters. and then they go ahead and put ā€œHDRā€ on the box.

There’s also a problem where sometimes HDR doesn’t detect/work correctly and your picture can actually look worse. hooray!

I love framerate hitches during explosions (really, it’s a form of meta-feedback? If camera shake implies a camera operator than this implies player knowledge of a computer). I get real sad that I get yelled at when I engineer these situations nowadays

when i do this they call it mental illness

thats not a dig on you its just interesting that viewed through some eyeballs what you described is a flaw

Is it through the lens of, does it affect everyday functions? My understanding (and teenage years spent running/drifting/corroding through the mental health system) taught me to define illness as a personality function rendered negatively impactful

do digital foundry ever play/analyse games for more than the first ten minutes or opening stage

i remember them gushing over the first thirty seconds of vanquish pc without noticing the double damage bug that got patched a week or so after release

I spent too many hours the first week getting it to a ā€œok everything looks pretty niceā€ point, so I’d rather not garble everything up between the pc hdmi-arc input and another for the PS4 pro. I hope it’s solid HDR as a Sony LED, upper mid range series but might need to set aside an…afternoon to mess with it, see discussion around the model.

That Gran Turismo video definitely shows traces of what I’m looking for and see occasionally.

its through the lens of ā€˜well there has to be SOMETHING wrong with you’ but thats another story for another thread

it is kind of silly to think about how super-ableist a lot of video and audiophile stuff is, half the time I’m like ā€œit’s too dark to seeā€ or ā€œit’s too loudā€

honestly a lot of things are too dark or too bright or too loud or too quiet for me, I’m always turning down the dynamic range on everything

yeah i use VLC’s built in compressor to just smash it down so that I can both (a) hear the dialogue and (b) not be blasted into space by the music. and i turn up the brightness on most games because fuck trying to see in their shitty dark spaces, i just wanna play this game

also i will say i can notice the difference between 30 and 60 FPS, and I’ve seen monitors running at, like, >100 FPS or something, and it is noticeable! I will also prioritize framerate over graphics most of the time as well.

But, my biggest problem is consistency, not high numbers. So if I can get a consistent 30 FPS or a occasionally stuttery 60 FPS, I’ll go with 30 every time.

yeah I appreciate the physiological reinforcing of the fruitlessness of getting it perfect

yeah i always have the brightness turned up so i can see, fuck your games mood

not YOUR game the ROYAL you

iirc they did a whole thing about panzer dragoon a while back but admittedly that is an hour long game

motion is the video game fundament

this and I also notice some frustration towards fidelity sticklers comes from a position of simply not being able to afford the high end stuff required for it, which is pretty understandable. I certainly see this stuff and think ā€œwell that’s gonna be something I get to experience in maybe 5, 10 yearsā€

this is how bernie can still win
