Games that I had to brutally cut but it wasn’t fair they almost made it:
- Noom
- Neufenstein
- Uru
- Alpha Protocol
- Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
- Enderal
- Gravity Bone
- Disco Elysium
- Portal
- Ico

One of these years, I will have time for Uru
so easy to clock which sb users played a lot of pc games in the early 00s
yeah I guess I could answer this but it would be bullshit because it’d all be PC crap. but maybe I’ll finish a list
Making this list made me realize that I really could have used a PS2 and some contemporary PC games in the early aughts (list is chronological):
There are a game or two here that I feel like I could easily swap out if I actually made a concerted effort to play some of the games that I keep telling myself I want to.
*what do you mean i’ve only played the PSP game!?!?
Special award to MGSV, Death Stranding, and Resident Evil 5 for containing the best parts of games in the 21st century, which are in games that are not the best games of the 21st century.
wait, what’s special about steambot chronicles?
i can’t really do lists like this - i’ve played too much and yet not enough
literally everything
it’s a relatively early open world game with a ton of stuff to do, plus it has a lot more charm than most other open world games.
you can charge straight throufh the story (during which you can be a bad guy if you want), or you can ignore it and be a miner or street performer or paleontologist or stock trader or a bunch of other things.
and you travel everywhere in a customisable walking vehicle thing
open worldish but with goofy robot controls, very high variety in what you can do, frequently funny, has that irem magic (the game shares a producer with the Disaster Report series)
One of those games that leaves me saying “I wish most games were like this”
well then!
bumpy “steambot chronicles” trot is also one of few games to embrace a katamari damacy-style dual analog control scheme in such a direct way imo…
also has a real flair for the cinematic just like the zettai zetsumei “disaster report” toshi series which it shares a large amount of its credits with, also much like those games features lots of branching dialogue trees
really charming lofi cel-shaded graphics, really entertaining mecha-based world where bipedal robots are used for everything from industry to battle… it’s a very well-made videogame that feels fairly unique and isn’t like tied to a larger franchise or something idk it’s just an ambitious and unique one-off made by one of the longtime brilliant videogame development studios. also the main characters are kind of like in a band together
i always think of the silly english dub that has the voice actors going “steambot chronicles!” over and over on the title screen
need this so bad
one of the goated games…
i had this game filed under “only tollmaster liked this” for some reason?!
steambot chronicles is extremely deliberate (read: slow, methodical), especially in the first hour or so. i think this can be a good thing (it forces the player to slow down) but it’s a little less pleasant now that this game isn’t as technically impressive as it was when it was first released. still, it’s absolutely unique and charming and has a crazy amount of cool ideas.
Arcanum has been on my list of games I should play for 20 years, as is Bloodlines. I love ToEE, so not sure why I still haven’t played either.
Bloodlines is hilarious. You can use guns, but it’s much funnier to punch people and watch them ragdoll through apartment buildings.
Tempted to put Cursed Mountain on my list…
This is one of my blindspots, a jar I fill with one marble every year or so. One of those marbles I’ve spent time with is Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I finished the jetpack marine campaign but couldn’t get past the second faction.
Does anyone know if it’s possible to play onli e these days?
You should definitely try Steambot Chronicles. It was my pick in 2016 for the game that I’d encourage people on this site to play.
I’d recommend Steambot Chronicles. Some of the vocal songs are bad (in an otherwise great soundtrack) but otherwise the game has a lot going for it. I never tried being a bad guy, but the title screen says that you can. I have not played a lot of “open world” games, but I like the way this one lets you explore and take or leave any of the optional aspects of the game that you come across. Wandering the streets is nice and atmospheric, and there’s at least one clever and somewhat-subtle referenc…
