This isn’t 100% like that, but Pullfrog is a game where you have to maneuver a frog around a tetris well as it helps you make lines or something.

Also definitely doesn’t count but Romino’s Adventure is a puzzle platformer where you have to grab and move various tetris pieces around to reach the exit, so maybe it’s like a distant cousin to these.

Appreciate variations of the theme, these both seem cool!

somebody on this very forum made one of these games:

https://jdmgames.itch.io/zem

the twist is that all of the blocks exist in the level and you have to move them around

Suwako-chan no Paccherisu
At Comiket in 2013, I picked up a copy of this Toho fan game by the game by UTG Software dōjin circle called Suwako-chan no Paccherisu that’s a Gussun Oyoyo clone (with a few ideas of its own, I think, like Toho-style bullet hell bosses).

I thought this was a really unique and amazing idea for a game until a friend showed me Gussun Oyoyo lol.

Tetrovny!
Also by me (in addition to Zem) along with WiL and Brian Polak, is a not-quite-but-similar idea where blocks fall at random and you have to navigate them to escape. You play David Duchovny and summon the help of Saddam Hussein and Fat Albert. It was 2003 and I was 20.

Wario’s Woods is the earliest example I personally know of

UFO: Unidentified Falling Objects, a game I only picked up because Landon Podbielski is lowkenuinely my favorite video game musician. It’s great though, and I guess it’s a spiritual sequel to a similar game whose name I forget

Interesting that this actually came out in 1994, a year after Gussun Oyoyo hit arcades. I wonder if we can locate an earlier one.

Oh this is so extremely my shit

I just suddenly remembered a game that fits this topic, probably from the early 2010s, maybe late 2000s, that has falling blocks and platforming and guns or something. can picture it but can’t pull its name. Reminded me a bit of Kayin’s I Wanna Be the Guy in style, but maybe not by him?

Yes, that’s it exactly! I played a ton of that at some point.

BTW, I finally played some Wario’s Woods for the first time since I saw it at a Toys R Us for 90 seconds in 1994. It’s pretty fun! Music is good as hell.

Saw one of these on Steam today where you have an auto-walking little guy and you have to build a path to the exit with falling tetris pieces while also making sure he doesn’t die, sadly appears to have some AI use though :\
