terror from the deep: phoenix point

i am MEGA HYPE 4 this.

xenonauts 2 is also coming out soonish. there’s a demo on gog

this looks better for obvious reasons; however the first xenonauts is at least much closer to og x-com than nu xcom with a lot of improvements and my understanding is the second one will be even better (i downloaded the demo but haven’t touched it)

in any case gollop is one of those permanent watchlist folks. i’m interested in anything the guy touches

chaos reborn was seriously lacking in oomph (as was massive chalice which was funded and released along the same schedule)

luckily invisible inc and original sin came out around the same time and those were both stellar so I wasn’t too disappointed

well, i also really love the newer xcoms made by firaxis – maybe more than a lot of others on sb? original sin was great, but way further off the path if we’re comparing new turn-based games to x-com: ufo defense. i never played much of chaos reborn, myself, but given how phoenix point looks it may have been a stepping stone in gollop’s greater career…?

never played xenonauts as i really wasn’t drawn to the look of it, but i should see what’s up with this new one while i await pp.

new xcom was definitely good, it just had some really cheap core design concessions and they went maximalist for the sequel rather than fix them.

compared to invisible inc which singlehandedly addressed almost every longstanding issue in TBS games and original sin which probably has best-of-all-time combat in a CRPG… it’s not nearly as significant.

chaos reborn i played for awhile to get a feel for it, and i realized it may as well have been from sirlin because the entire game was built around a bluffing mechanic and uh no thanks.

new xcom sucks. i’m sorry, i can’t defend it. i loved og x-com too much and i’m always making comparisons about the two.

maybe i’ll watch out for this.

didn’t know xenonauts 2 was coming! maybe i should check that out.

some weird accessorizing going on with those fn scars. looks like for optics one of them just has two flip mount magnifiers and another for some reason has both an angled foregrip and a verticle foregrip, and the character doesn’t bother to use either of them.

in case anyone wants to try it

the only thing i liked about nu xcom (relative to x-com) was the multiplayer, which ruled
aside from that, i can appreciate that it seems to inspired people to want to make ambitious turn based strategy/tactics games in the x-com vein again

i actually own nu-xcom2 but i haven’t even touched it because i was waiting for the long war folks to mod it. i guess they have by now?

Real operators need multiple foregrips for different tactical applications

Warning: Long War 2 is pretty controversial and hugely emphasizes the originally-not-very-important strategy layer and kind of leaves the originally-pretty-much-the-whole-point tactical game to languish

Remember when I made a SB X-Com 2 campagin and it was awesome?

I’m thinking of doing one for Darkest Dungeon when the DLC drops because I love that game so 2bad4nerds
