Switch! (Part 1)

I’ll never use joy-con again though. 3DS slide pads woulda been better than those dinky thumb sticks Nintendo landed on.

I keep thinking about getting an alternative to the joy-con, and I looked at all those 8bitdo options, but I think having a split controller is probably the most important thing for me right now.

You are an adult and can make your own decisions intelligently

But I’m begging you, in light of the propensity of sticks to just fucking die, don’t get a Lite

Tbh this is still actually the strongest argument against me getting one at all, Lite or Original

They won’t fix it ever

It’s Nintendo, therefore, it’s a feature

Almost bit on latest Romero fiasco Empire of Sin but the internet told me it’s still too bugged to pay $15 for

So, Mushihimesama has come out for the Switch.
Is it on par with Mushihimesama Futari?

I remember them being roughly similar in quality although having played them in the opposite order I don’t have high confidence you’ll feel the same way

We will see! I have laid my hands on a hacked xbox 360 (“customizing” one by myself was proving too much of a hassle, this time).
But probably it makes sense to play the first episode first.

By the way, if I remember correctly, you played Hyper Light Drifter, correct? The mood and the art of the game are great, but how is the rest?

The gameplay is pretty good. Fair and well-signaled, mid-difficulty setups structurally similar to Zelda but with Souls dodge roll and commital sword attack chains. There’s no innovation in it, but it’s neither boring nor does it overstay its welcome by requiring a large number of retries.

I’d add that the music is very good too! I often listen to it on long car drives

The hefty tone and the atmosphere surely make it interesting for me.
I tend to dislike 2D zeldas. I quite liked Terranigma and Secret of Mana, when I was younger, but for example I played Link’s Awakening on the Switch and it was a huge disappointment, childish puzzles until the very end of the game… I also never cared much about Link to the Past… Hyper light drifter sounds more interesting because its qualities and drama could gel a more with me.
I also wonder if I should try Link between worlds, since it’s very loved around here.

edit… i didnt realize the last line was a bit off topic, since we are talking about switch ere…

I would say HLD has more in common with Terranigma and Secret of Mana (and for that matter the NES Zeldas) in that it’s an action game first and foremost, and the puzzle/exploration adventure part is a palate cleanser

Link Between Worlds has its own unique thing going on in that it’s in large part about cheating the system by keeping your “rented” items indefinitely. It’s like playing Link’s Awakening with heavy use of theft and sequence breaking, except it encourages you to play that way up front

I prefer Mushihimesama Futari but the original is great too

imo HLD is excellent. great art direction + overall Vibe, snappy 2d action that asks just enough of you and is well-paced with all the ruin-crawling, doesn’t overstay its welcome or demand completionism

i’ll also recommend Timespinner if you’re in the mood for good 2d search action on the switch and/or thought castlevania harmony of dissonance’s “navigating a huge space by constantly portaling between two different versions of it” thing was neat

biggest problem with HLD by far is that it seemed like it was missing a final level or a postgame – I appreciate a non-ending as much as the next person but it really stole its own thunder

Yeah in the end it feels like empty calories. Less than the sum of its parts… but the parts are really damn good. I’d recommend it to anybody, it’s definitely worth your time, but it’s ultimately an A- when it could have been an S
