Honestly wish I was brave enough to rock bare chest + vest as my everyday look, at least in the summer time

So did anyone end up getting/playing moon. I kinda forgot about it and I have a million games to play anyway but I’d sure like to hear what people think

As someone who skipped Mario 64 outside of playing some random segments at a friend’s house in high school, it still works. Mario’s a little slide-y, and I have the hardest time positioning myself to read sign posts, but I like the format of the game. I guess it’s the grand daddy of the reusable levels of Katamari and EDF. It also has this cheery inviting version of Sen’s Fortress sort of thing going

I’ve never even seen anyone play either Sunshine or Galaxy so I have no idea what I’m in for with those.

picked up 3D All Stars. thoughts on each:

64: still got it! the game is really a pleasure to play, even though it feels like Mario’s movements don’t quite synch up in the same way with modern analog sticks. the low-poly Mario thing is kind of ridiculous

Sunshine: i didn’t really like Sunshine when it came out and…yeah, idk, i still don’t know if i do. i don’t find FLUDD to be an enjoyable way to move around, but i am trying to be objective and not wish for something different. mostly, i just find myself often wondering where i’m supposed to go in certain levels.

Galaxy: i liked this a lot at release, but now i’m not so sure. it feels very busy, in that you have all this crap on the screen you have to be collecting at all times. looks very pretty, though.

I booted up Galaxy 2 on the Wii U because there was such an outpouring of appreciation when All-Stars was announced, and I felt the same way about it. Worse, probably, because so much of the early platforming relies on the pointer to manipulate grapple points.

And now I’m reminded again that every sequel to Mario 64 deemphasized running around and jumping.

yeah, this is sort of my problem with the games. i’m going to go back to them today with the “Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)” attitude, and see if…hey, maybe these games are good if i delete my expectations of what a Mario game is?

idk if that will work. but yes, i think Mario is just such a joy to control in 64, whereas in Sunshine and Galaxy, you have all these other things that you rely on for propulsion, and none of them feel as satisfying.

I think I like a fair few things about Sunshine, but I’m remembering why I dropped it years ago. They’re just a little too sprawling without enough things of interest. I also sometimes don’t know where I’m supposed to go in the overworld, too, and the whole thing feels kinda muddy. Why do the bosses basically take forever to beat? They’re tedious.

That said, Sunshine looks gorgeous? There’s some sort of almost-cel-shading going on that’s helped the game look really sharp in this HD adaptation, so much so that I think I wouldn’t blink if a game looking like this showed up on the Switch.

Jesus Christ, the framing story is so tedious, though. I almost didn’t make it through that.

I’ve been playing around with 64 a bit, which is still a joy (I played 64 after both Sunshine and Galaxy 1, iirc). Haven’t touched Galaxy again yet–saving that for after I figure out a bit more about how I feel about Sunshine, I think.

yeah, forgot this point, too. after getting one hit on Petey Piranha, i immediately said out loud “ugh, ok, i get it, already.” it’s just so much waiting around.

galaxy and sunshine (to a lesser extent) both get in the way of you having fun so often, it’s silly

do you really need to prompt me to save the game for EVERY BLUE COIN?

and don’t get me started on galaxy. that game keeps handing out insulting tutorials hours and hours into the game. it doesn’t trust you to know or do the most basic shit

I love Sunshine! It’s so great to look at. You can slide on your belly!

In high school, nine of my friends and I had gotten five TVs, five GameCubes, and five copies of Sunshine together. We raced to see who could beat Bowser first. Every agony plunged deeper toward Hell. Every achievement brought one closer to grace. It dares you to risk everything time and time again.

I say again, you can slide on your belly!

The opening cinematics for Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube are so bad, I wrote off storytelling in videogames in general for half a decade.

The squirting a little water then sliding move is a lot of fun in Sunshine but not being able to crouch which means no long jump or backflip is pretty annoying. I’m definitely having more fun with it then I thought I would, never clicked for me back in the day.

The backflip is still in

The crouch backflip? i don’t mean the run forward then jump back thingy

standing alone in an empty canyon, the voices of my human brothers and sisters “Mario Sunshine is almost acceptable” echoing endlessly “With the Beatles is maybe a little too obvious don’t you think”
