Switch! (Part 1)

If you click ‘read more’ on that page and scroll down to the bottom of the description, there’s a disclaimer that detached joy-con are required. Not sure if that’s refering to the co-op ‘co-star mode’ in Galaxy or to Galaxy as a whole.

Wow, way to screw over the entire Switch lite install base.

A little disappointed there was no new Mario maker theme, but I can’t complain, the ninji courses have been pretty good.

Mario 35 is the best news I could have expected, I’m super down.

Nothing too exciting to me in that Direct, unfortunately. I was hoping for at least one big new game, or perhaps some bonkers ports of lesser-loved games. I’m still surprised they haven’t done any real Mario Odyssey DLC.

I will mess around with that Mario battle royale though. It’s essentially just Tetris 99 rules grafted onto Super Mario Bros, but I bet it’ll be a good time.

If they really wanted to get weird with it, they could have themed the Mario battle royale around the infamous Super Mario 128 tech demo.

Edit: Revisiting that video now, it looks exactly like a game of Fall Guys. Woah.

Privately and vainly hoping that a Pocket All-Stars will eventually show up with SML/2, (and Donkey Kong 94??), NSMB2, and 3D Land

Excited for 3D Allstars although the lack of Galaxy 2 is a bummer. Now the race is on to see if I can get this stupid joycon drift fixed within two weeks.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is a game title that makes me feel extremely old

extremely generous of Nintendo to just go ahead and practicalize and implement my personal dream of scale-speed augmented-reality multiplayer FPV RC car racing, yes okay yes Sega Super Circuit shhh. i doubt it but wonder if it can handle elevation changes.

Replace Sunshine with Galaxy 2 you cowards. Sunshine barely holds up.

Sunshine does have that great boss fight though. The one where you’re hovering above a beautiful resort at sunset, blasting water down onto thousands of splitting and multiplying shadow manta rays gliding across the ground. I’d play a whole game of just that.

i’m fine with all the SMB news, but none of it has me excited, per se.

happy to finally be able to play 3D world, which i’ve heard so much about. i’m pretty lukewarm on Galaxy and Sunshine, but i’d replay SM64.

that Game & Watch, though, fits right in with my current sensibilities. saw somewhere it would be going for about ¥4980 and assume it will be similarly priced over here. wondering if it’s going to be impossible to get, though, like every other Nintendo limited release item.

the Mario Kart thing is neat and something i’d have really loved as a kid.

doesn’t everyone think sunshine is way better than galaxies?

ok actually now i’m wondering, does anybody (interesting) like galaxy 1/2 particularly, has there been anything worthwhile written about either of them other than dunks

I’ve played enough Mario 64 for a lifetime, but I skipped the GameCube and Wii. So I’d like to play through Sunshine and Galaxy but not if they require joy-con. I’ve lost count of how many times (4?) I’ve sent mine in for drift repairs, and I can’t be bothered to again.

I feel like people who aren’t just Nintendo worshippers tended to think Galaxy 2 was better than Galaxy 1 on account of more interesting and creative level design. I didn’t get all that far in Galaxy 2, but that seemed true, from what I remember.

Scrolling through Twitter, it’s interesting seeing how many people are like, “Who even gives a shit about Sunshine. Gimme that Galaxy!” and others are like “Galaxy sucks, thank god for Sunshine, right?”–everyone talks like their opinion is absolutley the consensus, but I’m pretty sure there’s no real consensus.

I played all of these games years apart and haven’t really revisited so it’s hard for me to speak much critically about them!

Honestly, that’s kinda the reason that I’m excited to be able to switch between these games and Odyssey at will–really put them in context against each other!

I’ve been meaning to restart Sunshine for years.

I want someone to explain how drifting and mini-turbos work in Mario Kart Live.

i am excited to replay 3D world and try new 3D world content but this whole Disney-vault style purchase window and not being able to play Mario Galaxy in portable mode is really souring my whole mood about this. the latter is really the one reason i was most excited to get this and they can’t just take my money outright, they gotta bend themselves in pretzels to be Nintendo about it.

that being said i’m so extremely curious about this Mario battle royale or whatever and if they don’t have a skin based on The Wizard, that feels like a missed opportunity
