Switch! (Part 1)

How’s it?

Finally got one of these. It’s great. I assigned the joystick buttons to the two flap buttons on the back so I don’t need to click the sticks in while playing. It’s more comfortable than the joycons.

Do you miss the gyro and/or rumble?

Not yet! I didn’t use the gyro much anyway.

Hmmm I guess I hesitate because I like rumble (don’t care if it’s HD or not), and I’d be super annoyed if I came across something like those gyro shrine puzzles in BoTW and couldn’t interact with them.

Still, I’m very tempted by that Hori split pad. But I’m hoping 8bitdo will release something similar with gyro and rumble. That’d be nice.

Oh wow that’s right I forgot about those gyro shrine puzzles. Hum. I guess I’d have use the joycons or the pro controller for those huh.

Yeah. I dunno how common a problem that really is though. Only other example I can think of is like one level in New SMB U Deluxe.

it makes zone shots a heck of a lot easier in Mario Tennis, although you can use the joystick also

small, i like the dpad.
battery life is great. it really is vita 2

It always helps with aiming.

i’ve put in like 8 hours into Tokyo Mirage Sessions already, so i guess i like it.

i can’t put my finger on exactly what kind of MegaTen game it feels like; it’s like a PS1-style Atlus game, but with the graphics and aesthetics of a post-Persona 4 world? kind of?

also surprised how much FE mechanics play a role; you have sword/spear/etc weaknesses in addition to all the usual MegaTen ones.

was odyssey any good or should i just get maker???

it’s inessential imo, get maker / smash / fe / DQ first (still amazing fire emblem is that decent), but it is still quite good if you feel like it

Like Mario Odyssey? Yeah it’s A pretty good time. It’s definitely trying to bring together the disparate styles of different 3D Mario styles together into one game, and mostly succeeds at it.

I would take it far over the incredibly sloggy single player of Smash, the good but slight single player of Mario Maker (although they fan levels are a different story), for instance.

that’s 15 more than i usually stick with them

I thought was mario odyssey was exceptional and the first worthy followup to mario 64

I guess your mileage may vary and I know some folks didn’t like it as much but it seems odd to recommend mario maker in its place

two completely different kinds of games imo

Mario Odyssey is just an okay platformer that doesn’t do enough to challenge the player to use its mechanics. It was very fun, but not very replayable. I didn’t feel the need to get any moons after completing the main story because I had already seen everything and jumped everywhere. There’s only so much terrain I’m willing to press the B button on.

I definitely think Mario Maker 2 is better than Odyssey, I don’t think it’s weird to compare the two. It just depends on what you’re getting out of a Mario game.

Mario Maker 2 can offer many different facets of platforming challenge, as well as “collecting” levels, puzzles, speedrun levels, @Gate88’s horrible slippery ice climber level, and basically just infinite content. I get the same kind of pleasure from Mario Maker 2 as I do from Odyssey, just in a different style, and in vastly different quantities. I guess there’s a lot of Odyssey if you’re into collecting 999 moons, but like I said, it’s all the same levels you’ve seen before, whereas Mario Maker 2 can offer you new content every 5 seconds.
