Pain and Gain, starring Stockpile Thomas and Yurt
This is so ridiculous to me. Why was Demonâs Souls selected as the poor sap who would support the full weight of a new generationâs showy, insecure demonstration of its technical abilities. This is like what Rare did with Perfect Dark Zero by making it ugly as shit and stupid as hell just to sell people on HD. But why Demonâs Souls, why did no one at Sony care about that game until it was time to beat the crap out of it wtf.
Good lord, the fucking hubris
Underlying this (and a lot of remakes headed up by people not affiliated with the creative choices in the original) is the specter of the myth of progress. Mr. Moore McDork in that quote is effectively saying this is what it would have been if they could have made it so. As if with each technical advancement, weâre nearing the perfection of the one true ideal form of video game.
sad take: iâm pretty sure most people love the way the new DeS looks
i feel pretty ambivalent about it. i think the original looks better, aesthetically, but i also donât hate this.
either way, that dev quote reminded me of when WF was making Contra 4 and the lead dev said some nonsense about how he doesnât think any Contras after 3 count and itâs likeâŚbuddy, those are the good Contras, that youâre leaving out. buddy.
I did a search for Demonâs Souls on Twitter half an hour ago and literally everything that came up as a top result were various games journalists saying itâs just so goddamn beautiful.
Players could take advantage of the gameâs unpolished state to cheaply attack certain bosses through the gameâs fog doors â barriers that wall off rooms where boss fights happen. Players wonât be able to exploit those bugs in the remake, Moore says, but other, far less consequential, meme-worthy bugs and game design quirks will be properly retained.
Painstakingly recreating âmeme-worthy bugsâ for the lulz
Thatâs entergagement baby
once again confirming the sterling reputation of Trials of Mana
The gameplay and AI is the part of Demonâs that aged the least well though. Like, the part of the experience they specifically spare from the massacre is the part where you pull each enemy one at a time and stunlock them with the Crescent Falchion??
you have to chaos dunk the storm king now
no that would be something, theyâd probably just make it a qte
Video game remakes by developers with no connection to the original product who feel like they have something to prove and need to add their own spin on it while ignoring certain facets of what made it good to begin with are bad.
Resident Evil REmake is a good example of a remake done right. The blood of Resident Evil is still running through its veins, but everything is moodier, itâs harder, it toys with you and plays on your expectations from your experiences with the original game and shakes up the scares. Despite the plot being the same, it feels like a different game, and because everything is done so well, it doesnât feel irreverent towards the original game (it helps that Shinji Mikami was involved).
They should make Demonâs Souls but youâre a pinball.
the demons souls remake is going to suck because itâs being hyped up as a system seller for the ps5 so the devs pretty much have no choice but to choose the tackiest possible enhancements that show off new ps5 features and that will win out over any concerns of faithfulness.
Iâm not saying they arenât hacks but itâs clear that there are economic/marketing factors driving the direction of this. even if they wanted to take a tasteful remaster approach that preserves/restores the original as closely as possible I feel like they wouldnât even be able to because it wouldnât be flashy and âsystem sellingâ enough.
p sure the devs think all of these things are objective upgrades though. but god, it already looks pretty silly⌠think how silly itâs going to look 5 years from now after all the new tech luster has worn off
guess we just have to rely on an obsessive fan restoration on pcsx3
4K Soul Arrow is the Dr Manhattanâs Huge Floppy Dong of Demonâs Souls XX SuperHD
Just imagine what kind of dumb shit theyâre going to be forced to do with the haptic triggers to justify their existence
oh no why did I engage with my least favorite thing on this forum, taking about souls games
I donât think thatâs necessarily forced to be the case. Naughty Dog started to emphasize the less bombastic parts of their tech superiority over time, and that new narrative was well-received
I think itâs mostly that theyâre hacks. They probably recently hired a bunch of hacks specifically for this project because they had no idea how to hire a good creative director
Likely they wanted a new From Soft game since theyâre usually critical darlings but Elden Ring wouldnât be ready anytime soon, so they went for the remake option.
give us the return of cookies and cream for the launch of PS5 you cowards.
that makes sense for a gritty âprestigeâ game like the last of us but I canât imagine it floating with an action fantasy title
