STUNLOCK THE PRESSES: combo breaking news (Part 1)

This Godfall deep dive is depressingly long for telling us that it has the basics of most action-game melee combat

one of the sublime pains of post-2010 gaming is getting through a really terrible video like this Godfall demo and getting hit with a “and that’s a wrap :)”

i literally yell UGH!! every time it happens

you always save the best for last, this is what they do not seem to get

Does anyone else just think Elden Ring is straight up cancelled?

The reconstruction of the ZZT source code was done in part using the Ghidra disassembler developed and open-sourced by the NSA

The really advanced videogame science always seems to end up relating to computer hacking/security

A duplication gun is the kind of thing that feels like it was in Spelunky all along

If anything I’m disappointed by how bright and cuddly Spelunky 2 looks where the original -while still on the cutesy side- cloaked its subterranean environs with just-enough darkness to make even the goofiest critter seem menacing and every megadeath trap much more foreboding when doing the mental coin flip of do-I-don’t-I?

Still a Day One for me though

I can’t tell if this is the description of something at the Sony conference or a funny satire bit you are doing

It looks like there is a lighting system but it’s only activated when an area rolls as “dark”. I agree a lot of the areas seem a little too uniformly lit and high-contrast at first glance, we’ll see if it feels better in play (at least it has the virtue of being easy-to-read)

Can’t wait to Sp’lunk

oh i mean i haven’t looked at a single frame of it

plus it’s got online multi this time too right

yeah dude

399-499 euros depending on discless vs discdrive. Likely price given that these were taken down quickly.

Won’t convert exactly to dollars because of VAT

that’s both more of a discount for the driveless version and a lower total price than I was expecting. I guess they’re taking a relatively big hit on the driveless version to hit the magic number of 399 then

Yeah I was expecting over the 500 hurdle but I think they assume early adopters are gonna go for the disc-drive version. Series X seems to be just as cagey about price to avoid the E3 debacle in 2014(?) when Sony undercut them. The 399 version at least gives them the chance to say ‘at least it’s not THAT expensive’.

is there any way the price of either will be affected by a price reveal of the other? surely they must have all these numbers locked in well before now right

Only to the extent that they have to outguess each other. I doubt anything’s changing at this point. It’s just the perception of the price reveal is key to how its received (regardless of whether it is a good deal or not).

I think historically they’ve been able to wiggle $50-$100, since the cost to them is taken mostly in first-year sales (before the first price cut), which are low in the lifetime of the system. Once they’ve announced a price, it’s a lot harder to change it – obviously not up, but going down implies that they hard margin to cut in the first place. A leak probably doesn’t have the same binding effect on them.
