i’m pretty sure it’s not a joke and it is an accessibility feature! spiders are a pretty common enemy in a lot of games because most people don’t feel conflicted about killing a bunch of them
spiders are cool. stop making them an enemy in videogames you bastards
as a severe arachnophobe, no, we are not joking
make it so their blood is orange or green and then claim it’s android mode. nothing wrong with killing a robot.
this rules. sorry for ruining your “fun,” sadists
reveal the spider mastermind underneath, one blast at a time
Final Fantasy Tactics – 1997 Composer Commentary
- Unavoidable Battle – This was the first battle theme I created. I actually made another before this, but it was too happy-sounding, so they rejected it. As a reaction to that rejection, I created this more pointed, exaggerated song. By the way, that rejected song was re-purposed and used for the Unit Introduction theme, which is played over the opening demo. (Iwata)
- Character Making – Hmm, what’s this. Hm. Ehhhhh… mmm… Hhmph. What is it though? Oh, I see now. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. (Iwata)
unfortunately the arachnophobe mode replaces all of the spiders with sweet, cherubic baby children and puppies
-
Chapel – This song was created for a scene right after you begin the game, where our hero Mr. Bear is praying at the church. Mr. Bear just woke up from his winter hibernation, and his appetite is something fierce… (Enemies Attack!). Ouchhh. (laughs) (Sakimoto)
-
Enemy Attack – His instincts reawoken, Mr. Bear starts attacking the humans around him! What’s wrong Mr. Bear?! Wasn’t this supposed to be a Family Adventure…? Why, Mr. Bear, oh god, why … (Act 1 Complete) (Sakimoto)
Maybe my persona on here and Twitter should be “guy who has a horrible opinion one way or the other about the lack of difficulty settings in sekiro” except about spiders in games
“Why spiders in games are gatekeeping of the worst kind - and that’s a good thing”
Should’ve taped it in Spanish guys
Welp, now they have! Cool game gets better
There was a patch for System Shock 2 to remove the spider enemies so the demand for this has been around for some time.
Chiming in on the phobia discourse for a moment, I sympathize somewhat because I am terrified of heights and any halfway convincing recreation of the experience of being high up makes me break out in a cold sweat. (Please imagine Mikey playing a cheerful, cartoonish game like Grow Home in the physical grip of intense fear for several hours as illustration).
That being said I seek those out and I don’t think you could as easily modify those sequences as you could do with something like spiders. So I guess I sympathize but also think vidcons could provide an opportunity to face these fears at just enough of a remove to make it manageable.
I’m not sure I have a strong point here really, but
I had a slight arachnaphobic reaction to protoss dragoons moving across the screen in starcraft once months after I’d already played the game front to back. must of been the way they looked in my peripheral to my brain or something
I am pretty afraid of heights IRL, but in game it is a fucking thrill. I love getting to the point where I’m so into it that I’m not scared of heights (especially when I’m juggling other dex challenges), but it is especially exciting to get scared again and figure out how to climb my way out and survive.
To bring a bit more nuance to this: my fear of heights is magnified by the game’s penalty for falling from heights. If it’s a loss of time, it’s NBD. But if it’s other things… it scales a lot. I have a real hard time dealing w/ the falling sections in the Souls games, but in Mario it’s like… w/e.
What the hell
oh hell yes, i always wanted ways to rematch bosses in all Souls games but Sekiro especially.
Finally something truly next-gen
If you want to be a true exhibitionist, the new Remnants feature will help you there, as players will be able to take 30-second recordings and upload them (with an optional written message) to help guide others. Community members can watch and rate these recordings, and if the feedback is positive, the recording creator will have their “HP recover for free”.
