take it to an electronics recycling center and buy a new one
Yeah dispose of the battery properly.
I always keep a bag full of used batteries to take to the battery place for recycling. Iām just not sure how safe it is to keep this battery in my house until I go there. I guess it shouldnāt spontaneously combust any time soon. I wonder how many other devices I own have swollen batteries inside.
Do they actually combust, or do they just leak corrosive crap everywhere? The latter would be my expectation but I admit Iād donāt actually know.
They are lithium batteries so yes there is the risk they explode.
I gather the realistic worry is an event that probably wouldnāt look very dramatic but could still start a fire if itās stored in the wrong conditions: it could decide to heat up and smolder for a few minutes before subsiding.
I found this article with practical advice for people who find a bulging battery:
Ever since my RC enthusiast friend showed me footage of a LiPo going supernova, Iāve had a healthy respect for these sorts of batteries. They store a LOT of anger!
The only difference between a battery and a bomb is how quickly it releases energy

I replaced my original PSP battery with the official Sony Stamina Battery around 2010, then removed that new one around 2017 when I noticed the swelling. I store it without the battery, and imagine Iād just have to play it off AC power the next time.
I saw swelling on my original and tried to replace it with an off-brand one that didnāt last long before failing to hold a charge at all. I ended up plugging one of those cell phone battery packs into the AC jack but that setup is not great for portability, having it dangle off to the side and gradually become uncomfortable, even though it sort of lets you avoid being tethered to an outlet.
is it like an immutable law of the universe that any smallish but ambitious gamedev team will eventually gravitate towards at least one of the following concepts
- navigating between light and dark world versions of the same environment
- controlling two characters on the one screen with the same inputs
- dynamic lighting based combat system
found it, phew
it had bulged enough to push the cover right off
thank you for saving me from this selectbutton youāve done it again
i am having a hard time telling if my PSP battery is swole or not but i guess iāll throw it away, anyway
