Was that a slow dramatic version of X Gon Give it to Ya on the Crossfire X trailer?

This looks so mediocre. You can see the NiGHTS aesthetic peeking through occasionally, but it’s so watered down and generic that it’s just sad to look at. I don’t see any real inspiration there, just pure blandness.

X… Gonna… Give it… to ya…

Sidenote: this is apparently one of the highest grossing shooters in history but is almost completely invisible outside of Asian territories. A billion lifetime users!(!!)

I cannot tell you just how much marvel movies have completely fucked up my studio’s ability to write any kind of character dialogue

half the studio plays with no audio and no one else pays close enough attention to the writing to actually get mad about it but I have to handle all of the spoken VO and oh my god

smh at no one talking about Xenoblade Chronicles PSO2

Balan Wonderland looks cool except for the part where 1. it’s a Yuji Naka 3D platformer and 2. no, having all the action instead of just some of the action but it’s really polished is actually not a good idea

This looked cool. From the Steamworld devs who I wanted to find the name of but I guess they’re part of complicated media conglomerate now so got clue what is right

oh who am I kidding

I will buy and play Balan and then yell about how bad it is and then wait for their next game

the suffering must continue

My issue with Balan is it espouses this musical theatre aspiration but it feels really surface level. The music isn’t strong and the gameplay appears to have very little to do with the theme either. Costumes = musical theatre (?)

Could it possibly be said that it might unfortunately be a pretty Bland Wonderworld :frowning:

it’s almost like Yuji Naka is a bad gamesman

NiGHTS was cool because it took conceptual inspiration from Jungian psychology, took visual inspiration from Surrealism and cheesy new-age mysticism, and turned it all into a coherent aesthetic. I don’t see any outside inspiration or internal coherence in Balan, just denatured self-cannibalization of Naka’s previous work.

crazy how psychonauts 2 just sort of “looks like an xbox game” in 2020. just like in terms of aesthetic or vibe or whatever
