It’s like one of the main games that works great in cxbx. I played through have the game without any hiccups this winter.

re. more vs less explicit homages i feel like it’s maybe a reflection of how “someday making minimum wage” has solidly replaced “turning the industry upside down” as the ambitious unrealizable indie dream. the nintendo references are the same as ever but the promethean framing of older indie tended to present these in the guise of raw material to be transformed into something new and meaningful (just like how indie games were going to transfigure the existing industry), while for newer games they’re more likely to just openly be market/genre signifiers (just like how indie eventually just became another prefab pseudo-genre within that industry).
i do think it’s ultimately more of a PR shift rather than something that directly reflects how much or how little is being done with a source text. like, it’s bizarre to me that something like World Of Horror is so direct about pulling from the work of a single named, living author, but they do an interesting job of chopping up and rearranging that material - so it’s hard to begrudge it, when much more bank has been made out of more conservative work that just made more of an effort to file off the serial numbers.

They’re showing some games off in Geoff Keighley pre-show. Yuji Naka’s Balan Company project is revealed ‘Balan Wonderworld’ ‘the action game of action games’. Costume-based action-platformer set in a musical theatre world. Nights into dreams character designer. Action has an even looser meaning in games than I thought.
