thank you @Dracko for being one of the few and proud to uphold the standard.

Well after getting my ass kicked on hardest for a while, this fight felt really good.

Here’s the thing. I think it’s fine as a brawler game, but it’s a bad Streets of Rage game. It just feels like they were making a very different brawler when compared to the other games. I have sort of figured out and can work with Cherry, but it’s just… not a Streets of Rage game.

edit: Also goddamn I love Go Straight. Expander’s great too.

i havent pushed too far into this yet but as an BK/SOR obsessive i can say that the spirit of the thing is definitely there in that newgrounds-flashgame-tribute kind of way

like, the fist-meets-face kinaesthetics are there imo. but i think sor4 dispenses with the less visible bits of sor2’s rhythmic and technical nuances and trades it in for, like, pomp and circumstance. i won’t say the juggling and wall-bouncing isn’t fun, but SOR games work on a very specific rhythm that this game pretty much completely ignores. the signals don’t dancewalk like they used to, it’s a pretty big tell.

i’m surprised by how much i like the way the game looks and sounds. blaze is thicc af and some of the music here is on par with its inspirations (though some of it is fucking dubstep)

but it lacks… i don’t know how to put this, but, it’s missing the austere urban personality of the other games. for being bright and flashy and stylized , the SOR games have, like, a very specific kind of sega grit that is absolutely nowhere to be found here

i like this game and i will pay it with girls, but it’s such a fangame that it’s hard to take seriously.

The combat feels very guardian heroes to me sometimes, which is cool, but different from normal SoR. I am enjoying it though, and stage select with optional friendly fire is making it very kid-co-op friendly, which fuck, I guess is some of how I gotta think about games for a while.

this is going to sound like me being an asshole but there is ample and equal room in my heart for a game I’ve been playing for 28 years and a game that takes cues from that and does its own thing and makes an equally interesting product

this is assuming they aren’t crowded out by my love for 3

idk I just keep playing this game, I like it a lot. I’m no video wizard, so I’m not trying to beat mania arcade mode or anything. I’m mostly just playing story mode on whatever difficulty I feel like at the time and picking different characters every level or two. I like being able to do that. the game feels good.

floyd should be the template for making a “big guy” in action games that’s actually fun to play

I have not gotten good with Floyd, but mostly because Adam is so fun.

idk if this is partially a response to me but i do want to clarify in general that this is an excellent belt-scroll and ppl should play it, with me,

i keep forgetting this exists! i guess i’ll put it on my list

beat the game on everything but Mania, so far, which is…very tough and makes me feel alive

Raiden is kind of a bad example because he has huge range with his regular moveset and can switch over to being a gun and the only bit where he suffers is the last boss because he can’t just grab enemies

meanwhile, Floyd has good pokes but his main mobility option is trading health, he’s reasonably balanced in a way that’s not really lopsided to any particular part of the game

I feel like one of the general complaints is along the lines of “well it’s not very SoR like”

which, in my mind, reads as:

  1. you just wanted 2 again
  2. what the hell does this mean have you played 1 recently

which, again, is me being an asshole

this wasn’t an attack pointed at you, it just came after your post

I for one am all for the dumb shit in this game regardless of whether or not it holds up to a “standard” (Max’s back pipe hitbox launches enemies up and forward, so you can hit them two more times in midair with more pipe swings and that’s so incredibly stupid that my brain stops working properly and releases too much dopamine)

just wishing that it sure would be nice if the defensive special could be used defensively instead of you having to be 5 steps ahead of the AI

So aside from the oddly missing configuration options is the Xbox/PC version of this otherwise compromised? Gamepass is the only access I have to this game at the mo
