So weird to see the shatner mask in its intended use and it still looks terrifying. But maybe it’s just hindsight? The spock one is still weird but not as unsettling
yeah I wonder if it was never the michael myers mask if it’d seem normal
no man that mask is fucked up
Here’s the thing about Deep Space Nine: the whole show is that good on average
If you had watched Far Beyond the Stars as your random one-off episode, I would agree that it sets too high a bar for the rest of the show to clear
Yeah I love that episode but it can get so much better. DS9 is my favorite TV show for a reason.
Heard a great interview/watchalong with Tawny Newsome (Mariner) on the Greatest Trek podcast. You can definitely tell they got the right cast and crew through great effort rather than luck, it’s cool seeing how the project went from a dismissed notion of a “half-hour Star Trek comedy” to what it is now, thanks to the creators hammering on that drum.
Starbase 80?! was fairly fun, I loved Nicole Byer as Commander Nox in particular. She managed to do the “is able to technically not be panicking while constantly panicking” hat trick that never stopped being a delight. Fun seeing Stephen Root as well, always a welcome sight.
Thoughts on 'Starbase 80?!'
On balance, still not really getting more than a few chuckles out of the ep, but it is pleasant enough to watch. I sorta just want the show to be funnier, but, it is as it is. It feels like they’re a bit scared to make the main cast do anything too crazy, so you don’t get that comedic potential that comes with taking risks. As it is, everyone remains more or less perfectly professional and you’re brought on a tour of the wacky goings-on of the starbase.
I hate to compare this show to Rick & Morty, because I do feel like it’s become something a lot different, but your standard R&M ep will both establish a funny location and then play within the bounds of the characters to make the most of it. Lower Decks only does the first part.
Bunch of stuff here that I found very funny in concept but not necessarily in execution. I love the fact that they’ve just lost the lower levels to the space bats, that’s great. Actually watching a few scenes of Beckett and Ransom shooing away space bats though? Eh. The bit with half the station being owned by a hostile alien race due to a diplomatic bungle is also very funny in concept but sorta blah in practice.
The starbase having Enterprise and TOS-level tech was a fun touch!
the voyager where the space bugs make kes go into mating season and she goes wild eating beetles and dirt and flowers and shit is on and i forgot how charming i find even the absolute stupidest episodes of tng era trek
I just watched the finale of season 4 of TNG. Klingonmania 1991, baby! Worf’s arc is very charming, and this whole plotline feels like the first time Star Trek has really gone full space opera. I didn’t expect the villain reveal at the end! I’m looking forward to watching part 2 of this ep and finding out what the hell’s going on with this Crosb-ulan.
Nothing has taken me out of a work of fiction faster than James Kirk using the word “video game”
Am I crazy or does Pat Sajak appear as an uncredited background actor in the tng episode The Royale
You can see him at about 2:05 at the table on the right, grey suit, white shirt
Of Gods and Angles was a good’n, got a bunch of laughs from T’ana and Boims’ storyline. Mariner’s stuff was pretty grating but overall this game together in a fun way as it went along.
that definitely does look like him, at first especially, but i’d guess maybe no judging by the bit a little later. plus this looks more like modern sajak than how he looked in the late 80s
I just saw Darmok for the first time. Dang, I can see why that episode is famous! After watching it, my partner and I immediately rewound it to the first encounter with the aliens and just from watching the episode once, we were able to decode most of their initial attempts to communicate. Cool trick!
Yeah, beyond all the memes about it, it’s a fantastic story about building understanding between cultures through storytelling
It’s the optimistic humanist mode of star trek at its most persuasive
I want to believe
