Star Control: Free Stars: Children of Infinity: The Ur-Quan Masters 2

This is a thread for cult classic space opera exploration games Star Control 1 and 2, and the upcoming sequel, Free Stars: Children of Infinity (currently on Kickstarter).

I am cautiously optimistic about Children of Infinity! This image they just released to Kickstarter backers has me pretty much convinced that they’re going to nail the vibe:

What would an alien look like if it was as small as the smallest things in our universe? What instruments would you use to communicate with it? How would it express itself? And what would it want to communicate?

Good thread idea! This is a placeholder post for when I have something more to say.

Star Control 2 sits in the pantheon of all-time great Weird Comic Space Opera alongside Animorphs, Aliens ate My Homework, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, all of which were formative for me and all of which finally convinced me this year, “I should probably become a trekkie”. I’m currently becoming a trekkie and loving it!

The Children of Infinity kickstarter’s highest stretch goal is for full voice acting. I hope they get it because Star Control 2 is the ONLY video game where I’ve ever wanted to actually listen to ALL of the voice acting.

The ship selection screen in Star Control 1 was the coolest thing when I was 12

The kickstarter just ended and I can’t believe it, they actually hit their stretch goal to put full voice acting in the game! I’m very pleased, it just wouldn’t feel like Star Control without weirdly good silly cartoon voice acting.

This is funny to hear because in the 2000s one of the biggest Star Control 2 fans I knew of originally played on the DOS version and regards the 1994 3DO version’s voiceacting as an abomination.

I played the original game for the first time quite recently and I certainly did not bother with the voice acting. I had a great time.

(Note: I also turned off voice acting in Disco Elysium.)

(Post Scriptum: Oops this thread is old, tricked by forum software again.)
