When I was younger and games were more likely to pop something like this up at the start of each… stage/level/other, I think I would switch between saying them on a game per game basis based on whatever each one used. But nowdays I think I default to saying “level” unless otherwise specified by the game. Maybe that’s what ended up becoming more common overall and I grew into that terminology?

I say level but it’d be beneficial for myself and others around me if I didn’t because it’s very confusing in our progression-soaked world

I’m good with stages levels acts missions tracks chapters whatever studios we’re cool

Hate boards though, fuck that noise

i’m wildly inconsistent and alternate between stage and level. i’ll use mission if they’re referred to as missions, chapters if chapters, acts if acts, blah blah blah. i have zero preference.

i don’t like “worlds”, though.

Worlds are for open-world games, so naturally that’s probably the most prevalent term in modern games

man it’s fucked up that final fantasy xi had to end with all of its parallel worlds colliding into each other and destroying existence, time, and space.

Mario Maker 2 is weirdly insistent on ‘courses’.

levels or acts make up stages

like a stage is a setpiece. so in old platformers thered be a bunch of levels (or acts) that were thematically similar to make up a stage

I love Castlevania’s use of the term “block”

i say stages because level already means a bunch of other things

Reminds me of minecraft’s “chunks” (that can be different “biomes” and make up the “world”)

Yeah but stages is kind of lame and everyone already knows what you’re talking about when you say “in” this level as opposed to “at” this level

Or character level 10 vs the sewer level

I just got to biome 3-2 in Super Mario Bros. 3

Stages for fighting games, levels for anything else.

Maps, but only if it’s an FPS with heavy use of BSP.

Because of the Castlevania manual, as a kid I assumed block was a pun that I didn’t really understand but figured must hinge on the classic Bela Lugosi accent.
