there are lots of md sonic romhacks that are pretty much entirely new 16 bit sonic games with new characters, stages, and mechanics
you could put those on your current emu handheld

they really should have just done sonic 2 with only sonic and tails, then done sonic 3 with knuckles, and released a new edition of sonic 2 that has knuckles just like added in to the background of various scenes

i thought the first Sonic movie’s worst offense was that it was just kind of boring but i strangely have hopes for this one

the sonic movies are weird because it’s like the worst things about them are just literal results of them being expensive blockbusters in the present

its a really bleak landscape. i think sonic the hedgehog the movie stands out to me as particularly representative of this era in that it is mainly for parents? i am solidly in the aging millennial parent demographic that they feel so laser targeted at, and yet as a childless person i have absolutely no real reason to subject myself to them.
detective pikachu is another one i file in this category, but despite not knowing anything about pokemon beyond watching the cartoon a lot after school, i thought it was surprisingly watchable. but, again, it felt like it was mainly made for people who are constantly thinking “why don’t they do roger rabbit type movies anymore. we live in the new dark ages.”
but the different layers of nostalgia and 90’s kid wish fulfillment in ‘sonic the hedgehog starring jim carrey’ is just too much for me to deal with
at least the super mario movie’s ridiculous voice cast consists of people who are more or less relevant performers in the current decade. a darker path would have led us to mike myers doing an italian accent, dana carvey as luigi, etc. no one wants that.

stuff like this is a reminder that most franchise movies will never really be truly “bad” in a novel interesting way ever again. everything attached to a known IP will have some level of technical competency/fan service that was checked and vetted so that at the very least someone can make a youtube counting all the easter eggs from the trailer. these are decently made movies from a literal production sense but there’s nothing really standing out besides it being The Thing, and you’re gonna have weirdos like me lamenting that they follow too closely to the source material. they’ll never just say Fuck It and do something like that psycho adaptation of the Double Dragon movie ever again
you could make yet another Just Ok Star Wars movie, but the unique flavor of those Truly Bad moments in the Prequels will never happen again because movie making is just a different beast now

I might be getting kind of galaxy brained with this, but I sometimes feel like this is related to the fact that nothing is really made for actual children anymore. It all has to hold simultaneous appeal for nostalgic parents and the funko pop set. When people made stuff for little kids no one cared whether or not it was good, so there were some weird anomalies that fell through the cracks. Now all that content has been outsourced to malfunctioning YouTube algorithms

i feel like if it was for adult sonic fans, it’d be an animated adaptation of sonic 3 and knuckles or sonic adventure 2 or it’d have characters from the idw comics. a live action movie with a cgi sonic giing to the real world and befriending a cop is definitely for the kids imo
