I think we’re gonna play sonic R on stream after sonic adventure, just got super sonic left
I’ve been playing through Christmas NiGHTS again, on the MiSTer this time, to unlock Sonic into Dreams after playing the NiGHTS pedestrian patch. Winter is when I really get back into Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R specifically, and Saturn stuff in general. Just unlocked Metal in R.
The Sonic 3 Movie DLC for Shadow Generations was pretty fun, though I kinda wish the Shadow movie skin could be unlocked for the rest of the game. His movie design is by far the cutest look for him, I think. My answer to @Persona’s question on new music is: I don’t think I remember any of it outside of the remixed Space Colony and Sunset Heights act 1, which are pretty good, and the pleasant gallery music. Not overly fond of the Whitespace music. I’ve mostly been falling back on:
Space Port
Sky Troops
White Acropolis
And a few others for further runs in the game.
Okay now that I’ve seen Sonic 3 and thought it was good, I can say
the only parts from Sonic CD people care about are in the post-credits scene
I was basically laughing hard to myself every single time some dumb, minor random reference got made, even the ones that are most certainly not (Sonic says “can’t hold much longer”? neuron activated)
anyway, teasing Amy is the weakest and most boring possible thing they could have done and hopefully they do something interesting with the last ring being used next movie
In her big Sonic 3 Movie poster she is labelled as Professor “Tory”. Which is also what she is called in the Japanese version of Gerald’s Journal. In the English version she is just called “T”. So I guess the conceit that they are going for is probably what people thought: Victoria is likely Maria’s sister, Robotnik’s cousin.
damn it’s good
Question: do any of these hot -looking Sonic demos actually get made in full or does that go against the spirit of the community/IP strike etc?
Everything about that trailer’s presentation is so lush and cool and tight and then the actual game part starts happening and it’s like, oh it’s just the same Sonic shit as always huh
some of em go places! Sega is actually fairly chill about fanwork, i mean the Sonic franchise is thriving rn in large part cuz theyve hired longtime fan creators. like Mania itself was developed by people who have made fangames and hobbyist remakes
Yes please.
Yeah Sonic Fallen Star, the Triple Trouble 16bit, Freedom Planet, Spark The Electric Jester.
so ive actually bought and played the game this thread was originally about. its great!! maybe blasphemous to say but it could be the best “classic” Sonic game. i guess that’s like saying a greatest hits with some cool new tracks is a bands best album but hey sometimes thats just true
oh and after playing all the other classics and a bunch of Game Gear games i got Origins Plus so i can do it ALL AGAIN!! with beautiful new cutscenes! and i can play Amy & Tails this time!! blessed~ gosh theyve come a long way since the Mega/Gems Collections
i dont wanna talk about any of that though i wanna talk about the game that Mania tied in with. the one that established the status quo for the IDW comics canon. the one where you make your own Original the Character. Sonic Forces
and by talk about it i mean share my OC. meet Sleepy the Wolf. in this universe the name is ironic, i just liked the big wide eyes too much. maybe the life of a grimdark furry resistance fighter will wear her down… but for now, look she got an A AND 2 medals!!!
tbh i might hold off playing much yet this game couldnt have more immediately signaled “this is for fans of 3D Sonic ONLY, here you go sickos, it’s the bad guys from Heroes and Lost World and the Adventures, here’s Silver the hedgehog did you fuckers miss him??” like i feel like i am skipping timelines here
i love that “hard” difficulty is described as “for people who have played Sonic games before” and the ensuing game immediately feels worlds apart from any Sonic game ive played before
i laughed my ass off when Knuckles T. Echidna said “here ya go kid, youll need this” and handed my literal wide-eyed rookie A Gun
and then my first mission is “infilitrate the facility where they are imprisoning & torturing [the word is explicitly used] Sonic the Hedgehog”
you do get to feel pretty awesome grappling in while the ENTIRE SONIC CAST chime in as your handlers
idk maybe ill keep playing this after all
oh but the beginning is fucking TAILS SLANDER he’s cowering with a bunch of civvies and sonic has to save his ass!? and then he just stands by trying to scan power levels while his best friend gets his jaw spun!!! and just gives up the fight entirely when Sonic gets captured!!? not my boy!! Thats not my baby!!!
Sonic Forces is awesome for the 4 hours it lasts.
ok so I rewatched the first two Sonic movies before seeing the 3rd one and here are my thoughts as a recently turned 37 year old man who played Sega Genesis a lot and, let me be clear, absolutely understands that this is a series of family films for intended children:
1st one - better than I remember, has sort of a throwback feel of an early 2000’s buddy comedy where it’s Human and Weird CG thing, but also it felt like a much more solid movie story. Best case scenario this is a pretty good Watching on a Plane or in a Motel with your Family movie. The energy of this whole thing was “A well-meaning Stepdad taking his weirdo kid on a road trip”. Like Dutch but for furry teens.
2nd one - Trash. Line readings are somehow more stilted and weird than ever, especially Knuckles. I think the actress who played Tails in the games and this was doing her best with what she always did but I think there’s a noticble difference between Line Readings by Voice Actors and Line Readings by Stage Actors doing Cartoon Voices and it’s a huge gulf between the two that makes most scenes feel even more like annoying exposition dumps. The CG somehow is starting to morph into a fusion both Videogame cutscene assets and CG movie graphics done at the worst levels of both, setting the stage for…
Sonic 3. On one hand, in my opinion, this was bad. Pretty bad actually! It was the worse of the 3 as a movie, and it incorporates the look and feel of the most like C-tier level Marvel stuff and, maybe worst of all, it did, I repeat, did NOT have a full blown realization of a little girl getting gunned down in a government conspiracy. “But it’s for kids, not the 37 year old weirdo like you said above!” But its not really that at all in the second half, it’s pretty much just all references to stuff that would only appeal to sicko elder millennials like me with the Online Sonic Fan brain parasite and even THAT scene with the most movie trailer-ass “epic” version of Live and Learn I’ve ever heard felt too much. (Though i bet if i saw it in a theater with people who are down bad for the hedgehog it would be pretty funny).
I am reminded of the recent CG Mario movie where, even though it was a technically good and fine movie, at its very best it’s an overt advertisement to Every Mario Game released in the last 5 years, and thats the same feeling I had watching this except it was for the 2001 Dreamcast videogame Sonic Adventure 2, which is still the weirdest aspect of this to me, a full blown childless adult in 2024/25.
The connecting thread through all of this is a pretty good 90’s era Jim Carry style performance that gets kind of worse the more it gets serious and has Extremely Weird parts that are the only things still in my brain.
is this too many words for this? yes. did i feel the need to still say it because I’ll never forget the look my wife gave me when she noticed that I understood what was happening in the post-credits scene…unfortunately yes.
i also liked sonic forces, though i wish the character creation mode was a lot more versatile and i also wonder how well it would fare now that i’ve played shadow generations, which honestly sets a new standard for 3d sonic games.
sorry for ignoring your long post ronk but the only sonic movie i have seen is the anime
sonic forces character creator shoulda let you be a fox or an echidna at minimum, that’s like OC 101.
as for Sonic Forces, it was alright when it came out (when I last played it) but it will always have a special place in my heart for the OCs, one of which I made based on our beloved dog who very recently passed, but can now live forever in a game where he gets a hookshot and where Knuckles sincerely talks about the cost of war
thats ok loki, the OVA is really the best sonic movie anything out there that isn’t the intro to CD
