Sonic Mania (Part 1)

daydreaming of the alternate timeline where we got an early 00s Crazy Taxi movie and snapping out of it with a shudder

YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH

i just watched a tik tok of Keanu saying how he tried to go to the emotional depths and personal darkness to fully capture the essence of the character Shadow the Hedgehog, y’all i may be old and online brained and recognize the siren of cynical nostalgia capitalism (especially when both the previous films were pretty mid but ok) but i will stand up and do a full Leo Dicaprio point in the theater if i see a little girl get brutally murdered in this videogame kids movie

It really is so weird to see Hollywood actors take a Dreamcast character so seriously:

incredibly important sonic character “random pink hair mystery human woman from an episode of tailstube that ian flynn keeps winking about” has a billboard in the movie

[Shadow/Maria] - “Awww… how sweet…”

[Sonic/Elise] - “Hello!? Human resources?!”

as a totally objective bystander with absolutely no Connection whatsoever in this case, let’s be sensible adults/grown ups and just accept that this will be the biggest box office hit this year and get the Oscar nom for best Drama/best VO

:tarothink:

yeah, I wish… but a hedgehog can dream, righttttt

I beat this and Shadow Generations, I had such a good time, they really did their own version of that Mario 3D World/Bowser’s Fury pack and it works, scratches the “Wanting all S Ranks” itch. The bosses to me were still bad but I remember the last boss being 100x worse in the original Generations so idk. It’s kind of insane that by the end of this I somehow had more positive feelings about Sonic Adventure 2 overall, a game i literally revisited like a month before this and thought was bad lol (aesthetics and music notwithstanding, still undefeated)

I think the Shadow stuff made me wanna revisit Sonic Frontiers, I kind of fell off that game because while it was fun wandering around the worlds, I remember the actual stages being forgettable and the whole package being kind of bland and losing steam.

for years I’ve been beating the “generations is the only 3D sonic to have level design that mostly works for those weird mechanics” drum

You remembered correctly about the Frontiers stages being the worst part of the game.

Hoping Shadow Generations was an attempt to iterate on that

Frontiers 2 with more consistent cyberspace zones would be so nice.

Then again, I’d prefer it if they poured their energy into making more surreal open zones.

i can’t remember if i said it here, but if shadow generations is the level of quality we can expect from future linear 3d sonic games, then i am very okay with that.

in retrospect, i did like frontiers a lot, but i’d like the open world thing to be something they only go back to very rarely. (unless they use some kind of guilty gear-like shading tech to make one that looks exactly like the oav or the sonic cd intro)

I remember watching that parade just to see Sonic, only for it to pop and not show up for the rest of the parade :crying_cat_face:

Surprising to hear at the end of the video that even back then, Christmas decorations popped up right after Halloween! I thought it was a modern thing but the shops were doing it since '92!

Dunno if someone else mentioned it already in this thread but I just learned today that the Sonic 3 movie in Japan is called:

SONIC x SHADOW: TOKYO MISSION

Over Thanksgiving we showed our friend the Sonic movies because she hadn’t seen them yet. Except we played it at 2x speed because none of us were that invested in it, and surprisingly, at 2x speed it just feels like a cartoon or tv show? I was surprised how watchable it was at that speed lol

Ah we did that last year! Minus the 2x speed. I gotta say, while I enjoy the fun Sonic side of things, we all really started whining and asking when we’d reach the fireworks factory every time the movies forced us to watch the Friends episodes crammed in between each action packed Sonic scene. I really hope there’s less of that in 3. For god sake, we don’t need an episode of 90210 “For The Adults” since most people going to see the movie are pretty much adults now, WITH their kids.
