i got a reminder today that sonic lore is insane to outsiders.
my friend was complaining about how hard it is to find merch of her favourite one piece characters, because of how much of it focusses on the main few characters. so i said it was the same, with most sonic merch focussing on sonic, tails, knuckles, and amy. she then asked what characters i’d like to see toys of, and hat animals they were. when i got to tikal, she said “oh! knuckles is also an echidna! i know that!”, so i explained that he was the last survivor of the ancient echidna civiliation, and tikal was the ghost of their princess.
she was pretty surprised to hear this, she just thought that sonic was about “animal friends running around on adventures”.

it is still extremely funny to me that despite people constantly asking to put in Archie characters or STC characters or Sonic X characters or even Underground characters into canon, the one character that they simply just randomly plopped in there with no context or explanation was sticks the badger from sonic boom. she seemingly just showed up in brazil for the olympics and is apparently just out there ambiently
I am more than halfway through and somehow through pure volume it is probably in the top half of 21st Century Sonic despite itself. It has maybe the funniest “This Fucking Game” of Sonic games.

Sticks just appearing without context or reason and everyone accepting it without batting an eye seems entirely in-character for her though
