Apparently SNK’s hosting the finals for an official KOF15 tournament series in Japan in around 30 minutes. It’s the top 32 players and GameGoons are saying it’s expected to last 8-9 hours(!).

Man, what a nice surprise. Omega Rugal announced, will be free, and will come with a Boss Challenge mode where you can find the broken, cheap CPU version of Omega Rugal. That’s such a great idea, and I hope the boss version really is unfair because all of SNK’s bosses in this current generation of SNK have been really easy.
Honestly SF5’s limited time challenges have probably been more evocative of old school SNK bosses than anything SNK’s done since KOF14. I hope Capcom puts those all back into the game at some point before they close SF5 out.
Rugal looks great though. Really looking forward to hearing “GENOCIDE CUTTER!” again.

I’m only able to play the game when visiting my brother, so I’m slooooowly going through the endings, and I’m glad I got to this one early. I’ve argued that the series only really managed to get a handle on its storytelling with the Ash Saga, so seeing things finish this way feels very pleasing–it might be my favorite thing the series has done.

played through arcade as team ash earlier today. really liked in the ending where kukri’s looking at his flip phone, clearly wishing he was eating crab with his new friends, then dolores turns up and he’s just “they’re not my friends i don’t even like them especially not that ash crimson guy shut up”

this is kof all star, an aging mobile game that kiiiiiiiiinda could be considered a rinky-tink world tour mode (as in sf6), but several years older and with gacha elements, because of course. i wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but there are aspects that i find interesting.

I don’t get the joke. But I did played a decent amount of this game way back in the day!
k9999 appeared in king of fighters 2001 and 2002, then disappeared because snk got into legal trouble over how similar he was to tetsuo from akira.
then in 2022, king of fighters xv came out, and in its roster was a totally new, never before seen character named kronen mcdougall, who definitely isn’t just k9999 with shades
Is the joke that KOFAS has K9999 at all?
snk makes a point of never directly referencing k9999; his name and image are always redacted. in the improved remake of 2002, they replaced him with a sort of generic placeholder character with all the same moves, called “nameless.”
so in kofxv, everything snk has officially said around krohnen suggests he’s a totally new, mysterious character—even as the story and basically every interaction in the game affirm the obvious, that he’s k9999 thinking he’s successfully hiding by growing his hair out and wearing huge shades.
even then, they never actually say it outright as-such, and certainly never use mr. mcdougall’s, uh, deadname. it’s all played coy, basically continuing the ongoing joke about k9999 being unmentionable.
but then the mobile game just says, yeah, the relationship between krohnen and kusanagi? it’s because, k9999.
