Simple 2000 Series Vol. 81- The King of Fighters XV

NA★KO★RU★RU

I… I might buy a PS4 just for this game.

Got to love that toucan.

So, we’re back to straight-out blue SNK now?

I love how they announce training mode with the same enthusiasm as every other featute. EVERY BATTLE MODE CAN BE RECREATED.

Shun’ei looks like fun. Even if he can’t tigerknee those command(?) air dashes of his, if he gets an extra air action out of them (e.g. jD > air dash > jD again), that could be pretty neat. Whether or not it’s truly useful depends mostly on (a) can that pattern be made safe on block in ANY instance? and (b) could he use a pattern like that to protect (perhaps somewhat unsafely) an instant-overhead/fuzzy guard jump normal? Looks like a fun character regardless.

KOD looks a lot more differentiated from Tizoc than I thought. Looks like very few Tizoc moves returning, both normal and special. Still looks like tons of fun & he’ll be one of the 1st characters I try.

Nakoruru has some kinda ranbu super now, looks like. Or a Deadly Rave. But mostly I wanna see what the stuff she had in CvS2 is like, cause that’s where I knew best what she played like.

Team South America has a ninja and a toucan? That’s not even fair!

Ralf has Ralf Kick back. Nice, but where’s my backbreaker?

Yuri is still short-hair Yuri, apparently. And she still looks really skinny compared to her old incarnations. Oh well, at least she got her nose back. And they cured her stubby little T. rex arms like they did with King. Guessing also her new idle stance for 14 will make it clear that she actually has a neck? (I don’t mean to rip too hard on 13 Yuri, she had some sick-ass combos that I could actually do. But man, I kinda hated the way she was drawn compared to old Yuri.)

We still don’t know Geese’s Butler’s real name, I think? Maybe it’s on the official site and I’ve missed it?

SNK is streaming the game right now and I gotta go to work. Twitch archives and/or YouTube reposts, don’t fail me later…

are they intentionally making street fighter v look shoddy with these trailers showing off all the characters and features, or is that just a side-effect?

SNKPlaymore is now called SNK, featuring a new branding and corporate message (this should look familiar). SNK’s revival is in full effect (they unfortunately spell “stay” properly this time): https://twitter.com/SNKPofficial/status/724536345561952256

Every character has been revealed. The rest of the new characters are:
Masked guy = Mian
Team SA’s female member = Zarina
Kim’s Master = Gang-Il
Prisoner Team’s leader = Xanadu
The sleeping kid from China = Meitenkun
Geese’s butler = Hein
Boss = Antonov

Classic Kyo is DLC. There is a rumor of possible upcoming DLC that popped up on SRK forums last night. It’s just as sketchy as all the previous leaks that ended up true so who knows if it’s real? But if you’re the type that likes to dream have at it: http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/209188/kofxiv-dlcs-leaked-list

Game’s cover:

I’m really happy to see the back of Playmore. I wonder why it took so long. I like that the “new” slogan is the old slogan, particularly given what the old slogan is.

So this is official just as of today?

I know it’s just a slogan and logo change, but boy you couldn’t pick a better PR move to reinvigorate your old fans.

I know. It’s pretty superficial stuff, but it does feel like a sort of mission statement.

It helps that so many people from the old days are coming back now.

Increasingly I wonder about these characters’ clothing and accessory choices, given that they’re in a fighting tournament.

I mean. You can make these comments about any given fighting game. But do you really want all of these piercings and metal loops and hooks against your flesh? Frameless spectacles? Surely you’d want to wear things that aren’t going to injure you further when inevitably your opponent punches them.

It makes sense that a few characters would be impractical, as their personalities might dictate. But it seems like there’s very little consideration for this across the board…

She’s had a ranbu in the past (maybe it was NGBC?) but this looks a bit different. Benimaru has a slash attack at 0:26 in the Classic Kyo DLC trailer. It has a bit of a startup but it covers more vertical range than his knee special attack. Twitter says K’ has some new follow-ups to trigger, an uppercut and a forward punch.

The move buffer is possibly smaller than KOF13 or it was just the lag on the streaming setup people were playing on- it’s not clear what the culprit is but supposedly lots of people were dropping basic combos. Hops are still more floaty than 13. The overall feel of the game (like speed and hitstop) is supposed to be like the older entries and plays very well.

In the world of fiction all outfits should be fabulous and impractical. Otherwise you are looking at UFC bald guy in shorts dozens of times.

The Fight: Lights Out is the only true mascot fighter.

Well, I mean. I’m not asking for fifty characters in a gi. I guess I’m not asking for anything, really. I just find all of the buckles and piercings kind of ill-advised.

You can have good character design without buckles. I’d argue that most good character design involves zero buckles.

I skimmed through the twitch archive. The first hour and a half has commentary and shows off movelists. The rest is just free play.

Sylvie is hilarious but her animations highlight just how floaty jumps are now. Luong has a crazy aerial slash kick that covers an entire 180 degree arc under her. Mai really needs to wear some support because her breasts flop wildly in her standing animation. Nelson has a long forward-dash special move like Vanessa’s Puncher Vision but the only thing I saw being done out of it was a gut punch DM. Climax DMs look cool while also being brief, which is great for how generous meter is in the game.

The music in this game rocks. South America stage reminds me a lot of Yasuhisa Watanabe.

It’s starting to look like they’re going for a “home stage” for each team. If that happens, it’ll be a very welcome throwback. I don’t like this latter-day concept of stages as just random backdrops. I like a character or team (in the case of KOF) to own a territory.

I think I saw someone on another forum say there’s a stage for each team in the Stage Select. Some stages in the trailers could pass for team agnostic (aquarium) while others can clearly be tied to a specific team (festival stage for Mexico, Iguazu Falls for South America, gas station for Fatal Fury).

The ruined church just screams K’, as well. Sulky motherfucker.

(And, you know, Geese’s penthouse.)
