Shin Densetsu no Screenshots Gaiden 2.022: Everybody's Free (To Use Print Screen)

Bit disappointed by Monster Hunter Rise’s variety in fun mods but there are a few

(the owl head is not one of them even, that’s just in the default game)

^ Actually incorrect colors; you can see the correct colors at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWW4v2WdOrE for instance
Wikipedia:

When emulated via MAME, the colors are displayed incorrectly. The sky and water are shades of blue in the actual game, but magenta and violet under MAME, and the rocks are pink instead of gray.[5][12] Most of the screenshots and video of Mystic Marathon on the web were taken from MAME with incorrect colors.

I like them more though. : P

Wow, you are really hitting everything that was in the MAME cabs at the old bar I used to go to in Texas. I gotta know, is Mr Domino coming soon in the rotation?

Timber is one of those interlaced Midway games, like Tapper, right? presumably the PS2 doesn’t have an issue with that… not sure what MAME does these days but as long as i can remember they just double the video height which screws things up

Do you mean Bally Midway’s Domino Man? I’d never heard of it before now, actually, and I don’t think it’s ever been ported; I don’t have a version of it, at any rate.

(I used to have the PS1 game No One Can Stop Mr. Domino, but it looks like I sold that along with my other 3D PS1/2 games when I moved ~5 years ago.)

I don’t remember if Timber was interlaced on PS2; I’m playing the PS2 collection in PCSX2 currently and there are no interlacing artifacts but I don’t know if there would be.

The arcade version doesn’t particularly LOOK interlaced ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt7zvkibffA ) and Museum of the Game just says it used a standard resolution monitor, but this Reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/MAME/comments/121o84e/comment/jdtzfgm/ speculates that it was interlaced and yeah apparently MAME doesn’t support interlacing so usually it just doubles it or something.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2 does have an issue when using the Automatic renderer–probably Vulkan?–and maybe any of the non-Software renderers in that you can end up on a black screen when going back to the game list: [BUG]: Midway Arcade Treasures 2: w/ Automatic renderer, main menu black after backing out of Xenophobe · Issue #11126 · PCSX2/pcsx2 · GitHub . I think it’s due to the resolution switching the collection does on PS2 between the games and the game list–when I tried recording it from my PS2 a year or two ago, that freaked out my Elgato Game Capture HD60 and killed half of my recording.

if you’re trying to eyeball it, you need to keep in mind that the interlacing used for these old midway games is not the same kind of interlacing you’d see on e.g. the ps1 where the entire image is interlaced. it was only used when drawing sprites for extra detail - the rest of the screen is drawn like a normal double-strike image. note the difference in pixel resolution for the text (big, chunky pixels, some kind of ~240p/15KHz resolution) and the sprites (more detailed than any of the UI or backgrounds).

in the linked arcade video (sadly not really a good enough recording of a CRT to be able to really discern much unless you already know what you’re looking at), you can see how the sprites sometimes “shimmer” (if you frame advance around 7:12 in the video you can see it most clearly on the character with the blue outfit). something else to look for: telltale interlacing artifact in how the bottom of his shoe has a black outline in some frames but that outline is missing in other frames.

need to try this out on my ps2 and see how it looks…

edit: and i also am wondering about the fancier “script” text they use alongside the chunkier text. can’t quite tell but it seems like that stuff might just be 240p-style, even though it does look sharp… defiinitely need a closer look on this one

Hm well I dunno about that stuff, anyway there’s nothing that jumps out as interlacing at me as I’m playing them in PCSX2; but the only interlacing I’ve ever been familiar with has been full screen 480i on PS2 and 1080i on PS3, so maybe I just don’t understand what the effect you’re describing would look like. Timber and Wacko both run at 30 fps in PCSX2; I tried checking arcade footage of Timber that also seemed to be 30 fps but I’m not sure I found actual arcade footage recorded at 60.

A lot of the games in these Midway collections definitely have different resolutions for sprites vs backgrounds.

UPDATE: Turned the Deinterlacing setting off in PCSX2 but Timber was still 30 fps, w/ no shimmer.
