we love crayola saga
i was considering beat down fists of vengeance as a possible lunatic obscurity subject, assuming it had been forgotten over the years, but apparently, it has a bit of a fanbase still?
when it came out, it was a much-maligned poster child for the embarassing wannabe gangsta theming that was appearing in a lot of games after the release of grand theft auto san andreas. but i picked a copy up a few years ago to see if it was worth reappraising and: it is. it’s developed by cavia, and it feels like a slightly higher-budgeted simple 2000 game than the generic 00s action i was expecting.
anyway, here are the screenshots i just took while playing through the first stage just now:
there’s seperate oprions to turn off bleeding and bruising, and seperate options to do so for male and female characters. that’s kind of odd.
the environments are small, but they look great, and there’s definitely atmosphere here. really feels like you’re on the city streets late at night. also, you start the game wearing your mafia suit (that matches with the suits all your mafia buddies were wearing before you got split up in the intro! aww how cute). clothing is a pretty important part of the game! the two percentages in the top left are how likely you are to be recognised by the enemy gang, and by the cops. to keep it low, you’ve got to keep getting and changing into new clothes, and also changing your hairstyle every now and then can help too.
while you’re still wearing your mafia suit, the thrift store won’t serve you!
combat works surpringly well! when there’s a bunch of weak goons, you just have to walk near one of them to lock on and fight them, while boss fights keep you auto-locked on and hive you this fighting game-style camera angle (though they otherwise control the same as regular fights).
some of the thematic elements are a little cringeworthy, though to be honest, they feel more like manga video “fifteening up” an oav by adding a load of swear words than anything else.
If I had access to my Photobucket, I could show you how easy it was to make a Rudie in that game.
the psp outrun 2 has a sunset version of the palm beach stage, which is really nice
there’s also a night version of sunny beach, but uh
go fuck yourselves, sumo digital

The moment you download the Super Ethical Metroid [JU] IPS, something will change in your brain. You’ll be more calm, more patient. You’ll feel a little better.
That last guy looks like he’s modeled after that really bad half orc drawing in the 1st edition player’s handbook
that’s literally the best-drawn face out of all of them tho
you need the widescreen fix so the game isn’t stretched horizontally
I’ve never looked at it like that, but I gotta agree.
Just gotta say, it’s bullshit that they didn’t use a Suzuki Cappuccino as the coffee shop owner here, but the brown BMW 2002 is cute!
