It keeps showing up on Japanese arcade streams (like Game Center Mikado 【SFC25】特別編 ガロスペ超必殺技大会【第70回 ミカド大感謝祭】 2023/4/22 - YouTube and Game Center Kouhatsu コーハツ 餓狼伝説SP録画対戦会(20230421) - YouTube just in the past day) and I remembered I had the arcade ROM from the silly DotEmu Humble Bundle NEOGEO collection, and I found that Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting is a hidden playable character, at least in the AES version, so I thought I should give it another try. ^_ ^ The slow pace and dual-plane fighting system always put me off before–and probably the high difficulty of the AI!–but it’s really solid, unusually non-flashy for a NEOGEO game (except the opening of Duck’s club stage), and dang does it have some gorgeous music and stages! Also loads of old weird characters largely passed over once you hit the KOF photogenic popularity contest era–Axel Hawk, Jubei Yamada, and Cheng Sinzan, especially.

mikado’s love for ff special became a meme amongst some of my friends who subscribe to their youtube channel, there was a year or two stretch pre-covid where it was most of their output there

It’s an unusual strobe, even for SNK: the background switches to red, then blue, then mauve–kind of a mix of the two previous frames, I suppose–then the normal stage background, then back to red and cycles again. It somehow doesn’t hit me nearly as hard as the naked red flashes they would usually use.
Rather surprisingly, the ACA NEOGEO version (PS4 one, anyway–dunno about others) has an option that specifically just cuts out that Duck stage intro strobe.
So, a lot of folks seem to think the new Hildryn Prime frame is ugly.
Personally, I see an awesome looking 'frame with interesting shapes in need of accessories and a better color palette.
So this is what I came up with.
