threw this together late last night while troubleshooting cables ahead of the show today. this is probably the most unprepared we’ve ever been.

Since Lily and I just crunched through a project with a tight deadline I haven’t really gotten a chance to listen closely again to this guitar recording I made last Saturday until today. Now that I’ve done that I want to post it here. :cat:

In this recording you can hear my joy at being reunited with my favorite type of guitar pick (Jazz III).

This was brought about under auspicious circumstances. During the eclipse, I looked down on the ground and saw one of those picks, the red one you see here, covered in dirt beneath a patch of clover. So, I held it in my hand during the rest of the eclipse, and then brought it inside and scrubbed it really hard with soap and hot water in the sink to get the dirt out of all the fine crevices in the little letters on it, and then played my guitar for a bit and then got back to furiously doing our taxes (yaaaaaay that’s over). Then we were still really busy even post-taxes and I didn’t end up actually recording myself using the pick until I made this. I haven’t really gotten to use one of these picks (or like, any “real guitar pick,” just a dime) in a very long time and have been pining after them, so it felt genuinely magical to find one in the dirt while the eclipse was happening.

Picking out a couple of excerpts—I feel like both of these could form the basis for nice composed pieces, maybe two pieces where one segues into the other for the second one since it has a big transition partway through.

this weirdly reminds me a lot of

Awww thanks! I don’t think it’s weird necessarily  it sounds like in that track the guitarist is also fingerpicking in a like, playing-block-chords-and-trying-to-make-the-strings-snap-really-hard kinda way, and I feel like they both have a similar sort of “mix of emotions” somehow too. That’s a nice song ^^

I’m having a hard time coming to any conclusion…I’ve been listening to this recording a lot over the last few days  kind of silly in a way, I know, but it keeps getting stuck in my head, and sometimes I listen to the one above, and sometimes I listen to this one, which is the direct “live” recording with no additional reverb added, just the amp’s spring reverb and whatever character of the room comes through:

On the one hand I feel like the extra reverb rather suits the atmosphere and adds a kind of glittery drama and sense of space, but on the other hand the articulations are a bit easier to make out in this version (as well as the places where my playing is arguably a bit rough ) and I feel like it has a rather nice intimate quality. Does anyone have a preference, or alternatively not? :stuck_out_tongue: It would be helpful for me to know in various ways.

Here’s the reverb version again just for easy comparison:

Also, I guess, in the name of being open about my process, I’m playing a 2003 Mexican Fat Strat, with gauge 11 GHS Boomer strings, using the middle single coil and bridge humbucker pickups, with a Jazz III pick, through a Crate GX-15R 15W solid state practice amp, recorded with a Shure SM58 mic into an old beat-up M-Audio MobilePre interface that I probably had turned up a little too hot (although it would be nice if it didn’t break up quite as easily, wouldn’t it! grumble grumble dynamic range etc.). I feel a little embarassed listing all this out because I know it’s not exactly prestigious gear overall especially in terms of the electronics , it’s just what I have, along with a smattering of pedals that don’t appear on this recording (maybe I’ll use them next time…I often just play clean like this though). I like to think, rather by necessity I suppose, that if you play with enough feeling, you can gloss over any imperfections in your equipment. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have no inclination to do it myself (since I am bad at it) but the riff of this Circle of Ourobourus song is begging to be sampled and laid on some jungle beats, just sayin’

some tunes from a recent show, I was pretty happy with my bass-ing

your bassing is exquisite imo

so last week I signed up for this event where you’re semi-randomly placed in a band (they try to roughly match experience levels and song preferences) to play a few covers at a show. no rehearsals in advance, you just learn your assigned tunes, show up ~2 weeks later, and do your best. last night I found out I’m playing on:

Lana Del Rey - Let the Light In. pretty happy with this one! I think I might also be singing the father john misty part, lol
Cheap Trick - Surrender. you’ll never catch me complaining about power pop. the bass part has a few treats for me, too.
Samantha Crain - Bloomsday. the only one I’d never heard of, and the only disappointment. this song is boring!!
The Smiths - Ask. I was just telling husband that this is one of maybe three or four smiths songs that I like, pretty serendipitous even if it doesn’t seem that interesting to play
The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So. probably the hardest one to do a decent cover of, only because there’s so little to it. fingers crossed for a competent drummer and singer, otherwise it’s dead in the water.

anyway, I really like the concept of the event, I’ll try to get some video and post them if we sound half decent :people_hugging:

hey folks - i have a new song. this is also going to go on the album “Saint Elizabeth” i’m trying to finish before the end of the year

i wrote the basic melody of this song as kind of a toss off when i was 20 and never thought to revisit it until now. figuring out how to adapt it with lyrics and an arrangement was sure interesting. i think it’s definitely brand new territory for me though… was really emotionally taxing to do to be honest.

also i’m going to upload a youtube video with the lyrics at some point (because this is one where i def want people to know the lyrics) - probably tomorrow if i can manage it.
