I only just figured out the Rag Rappies in PSO are Rag Rappies because they’re Rappies from Ragol.

didn’t turn out exactly like i imagined, but it’s pretty cool i guess:

i wonder if it’s immediately obvious what i was trying to do here…
(may be clearer if you zoom in; this is less “art” and more “visual demonstration of a result”)

so, if the default ms paint colours (which, conveniently, come in 8 distinct hues) don’t give it away, this isn’t a vector graphic: it was assembled on a discrete pixel grid using line and fill tools.

what’s interesting about it is that within every ring of colours, each of the comprised segments has exactly the same area in pixels. this shouldn’t be too surprising for the lighter-coloured hexagons, since they can all basically be generated as reflections of each other, but it’s a lot less simple to verify for the triangles (note that they all have reflective symmetry with respect to the axis they lie on, so that trick won’t be enough)

in fact, obtaining this equality was a very non-trivial problem and i ended up writing a brute-force algorithm to compute which resolutions it was even possible at. it may appear like an endlessly recurring pattern but these are actually only the first four results, including, near the centre, the initial case where each “triangle” is just one pixel.

the inner regions are not regular octagons (it would be impossible to perfectly represent one on a screen due to the diagonal sides having irrational height and width); however, the further this pattern is expanded, the more closely they will form approximations. in a sense, the white lines (which do NOT all contain an equal number of pixels) represent the “error” - which thins and becomes negligible relative to the whole as you continue to “zoom out”.

i feel like the properties and freedoms of the continuum (or floating point numbers if you’re used to computing) are too often taken for granted in the study of geometry, leading to strange gaps in our intuition when it comes to discrete/integer-based spaces such as that of a computer screen (despite being surrounded by them daily).
i find it intriguing the way continuous, symmetric or self-similar figures can frequently turn out to be associated with sequences of finite, countable quantities; another example that comes to mind is how the golden spiral (irrational) resembles an “infinitely zoomed out” Fibonacci spiral (countable)

the true work of art here is that i managed to at least write one paragraph without parentheticals

I swear I found the source image in the pulled through the fourth wall thread but now I can’t find it

Anyway, I’ve been taking a class about drawing/painting the effects of light and as you may have noticed I seem to prefer the drawing. For this one I tried something new, it was mostly made by applying powdered graphite to toned paper with a brush.

Oh right, I should post my current in-progress project. This one I did the bulk of during lectures in my last semester of my Masters, to keep my hands busy and keep focus when the content wasn’t considerably interesting. Art Nouveau from the style of Alphonse Mucha is really pleasing to me for some reason. Hint is: Disney

Oh and this is in relation to a near-future scenario creative assignment that my professor kept nudging me to work in cross-stitch. What if the Internet of Things gets combined with the streaming environment so everyone is opted-in to surveillance, but you automatically get paid a pittance for each person paying attention to you to make it more palatable?

You have completely nailed the 80’s Japanese toy art aesthetic. This looks hot as heck, these should absolutely be toys.
