sgdq 2022: they got bulk slash in this one

I quit Halo Infinite at the first whiff of suspicion that the whole game was going to be Alienware hallway levels and overworld Borge tower takeovers in the Windows XP default desktop background, but watching this run confirm that is ALL that game has to offer… it’s another thing that makes me wonder what the fuck is up with the people calling shots at 343.

2021: Cruelty Squad’s grappendix is a more radical game changer than Infinite’s grapple is for the established Halo combat design.

at the very least, it will always remain the highest numbered halo game ever

This 4-hands Pokémon run charmingly captures the feel of a middle school sleepover.

i really liked the concept of this FF6 randomizer:

and watching the race was fun (to an extent), but these two commentators were absolutely terrible. one of them seemed totally impressed with himself and acted like he was offering these super clear explanations for how the randomizer worked when he was absolutely not being clear at all. and the other one seemed to be totally loopy and in la la land and spent half the time talking about how much he enjoyed drinking La Croix, as if that’s a beverage anyone actually really enjoys drinking (well this guy does i guess). it was almost like a comedy bit. i guess that’s the sort of chaos that we tune into GDQ for.

also during the Super Mario Sunshine run the guy ran out of lives 45 minutes into the run, and didn’t save or have any backups planned. he just had to restart the whole run and he was not able to complete it… so they just changed what the run was. on the one hand, i felt sad for him and it was nice that the crowd was cheering him on and being encouraging. on the other hand… you really should be prepared for something like this to happen in the midst of a marathon at this point and have backup saves or something. but then again, i guess that’s the sort of chaos that we tune into GDQ for.

This reminds me of when my friends and I gathered the gear to race Sunshine across 4 TVs. We also skipped saving because it seemed like it took a long time, but then someone died and everyone else just stuck their tongues out at them and immediately saved their own games.

“double-jump dino” is quite the euphemism for Yoshi

(watching the blind kaizo mario relay race)

Got up a little early for the Ratchet and Clank 2 wrench only run. Crowd getting rowdy.

Thief boss attempts getting messed up by really unfortunate patterns. Had no idea the game had mild DDA for bosses, reducing health per attempt for younger players.

the “beta showcase”/triforce% thing they did last night was genuinely really cool, thought i didn’t have much capacity to be impressed by stuff shown at GDQ at this point but this was def a very cool project overall:

the mgs2 european extreme + game over if discovered (!) run earlier got the big boss rank. that’s the first time anyone’s gotten big boss on any metal gear game at a gdq. it’s a really intricate and difficult run and that’s an incredible accomplishment, especially since the runner wasn’t feeling well.

enjoying the Control run… if only because I mentally make the speedrunner Jesse’s ability to break the game canon. this is the End Credits Neo of Matrix 1 version of Jesse, so powerful she has become a self-aware videogame character bending the map to her will. if only these folks would stop yammering over the top of it

the Wind Waker run was really great if you like runs filled with lots of long complicated bizarre sequence breaking glitches that were probably a very ill advised idea to perform live (which i do):

The runners of the TASbot Zelda 64 “beta content” run are so dedicated to their kayfabe of the run being “real” that the TCRF actually had to include a header warning that the run wasn’t real and please do not add content from it to the page.

The reason for the kayfabe, of course, is that the run’s purpose was to be an ad to boost the hits on their video explaining what they did.

some really creative levels in this one! they did a TON of custom work. stage 4 is a really neat mode 7 level if you only want to check out one.

The devs did a recap stream of the race:

There’s some interesting commentary here and there, including a peek of the mode 7 in Lunar Magic (spoiler: it looks like the mode 7 is fancy (very fancy) paint over pre-baked collision). Generally though, I just enjoyed the enthusiastic vibes and level of cooperation in that community.

Yeah that’s how I assumed it had to work. Mode 7 operates on the background layer and it’d be way more work to add arbitrary rotation collisions to SMW so it’s effectively animations between different levels. The level would be incoherent without it, though, and the design and execution are rather clever.

Oh yeah, it’s definitely a cleverly designed level that’s very aware of the limitations it has to deal with. Definitely a highlight of the showcase.

It does make me curious, though, what these level designers could do with the NSMBWii engine, which has much more robust support for rotating level elements built in (I’m unfamiliar with NSMBW hacking, so maybe this question already has an answer).

apparently one of the runs was cheated at this year’s SGDQ? dunno if any of you saw this

it was actually just the bonus incentive that this guy cheated vs. the hour long run he did before it which was legit? seems like a waste tbh. saw a bit of this run live but didn’t know anything about the game so didn’t think anything of it.

when the guy starts cheating it’s wild actually. like he definitely has some mental breakdown rambles and closes out saying that we won’t be seeing him on GDQ again. wish more white dudes broke down like this instead of getting into weapons

the best part is the keyboard change between runs

his rant on like scoreboards not mattering because you don’t see the beauty of the run and him splicing because he NEEDED people to see the potential of his run is just whiny baby stuff though. like hes NOT WRONG but hes also so whiny about it
