I’m rerunning a bunch of runs I missed from sunday because that is 10000% more interesting than a 4 hour glitchless pokemon crystal “speed” run
i have been tuning in periodically but it’s kind of struck me that some of these runners have weird cults of personality?
like i just watched a guy laughing at his own inside jokes for five minutes, it felt really odd and even a little exclusionary?
i’m a layperson that tunes into these things twice a year, maybe i’d get it if i followed these people, just feels kind of off-putting

oh no i totally feel that, people who play games seem to just cultivate a million inside jokes about the game that are INTENSELY HILARIOUS to runners of the game but completely inscrutable to a layperson
i kinda hope that someday they just get third party announcers so they can have color commentary and someone to translate whatever the fuck is going on, instead of a group of people laughing at shit without context
like i want them to EXPLAIN why the penguin walking right when you have 12 carrots in your inventory is fucking hilarious!!! TELL ME!!

its irritating how when anything genuinely funny DOES happen it gets beaten to death immediately e.g. the wario noises during a super metroid race, OOORRB
Don’t forget a number of them are pure streamer personalities that have built up in-jokes with their community over the years. Sort of inevitable considering the number of hours they spend on a particular game but occasionally it becomes embedded into the community’s identity. Also sometimes these runners forget that not everyone plays these games so they don’t remark on what they would consider small techniques.
