SGDQ 2017: The Pre-Hypening

I was interviewed for this article about halo speedrunning

woah, thanks for reminding us/me that this is going to happen soon.
somehow totally forgot about it!

YO PRE-SHOW HAS STARTED GET READY TO GO FAST.

Nier Automata out of the gates is a pretty GOOD start!

DK64 just finished and even though what I'm about to write about isn't really connected to the speedrun at all** I feel like I still have to gush a little at such an amazing concept in such a terrible game

At the end of the last conventional level, a nearly decent grasp at 64-style settings with a sprawling storming haunted castle, filled with enemies dressed up as ghosts, comes a climactic realization of deception and obfuscation. Creepy Castle’s boss, the game’s penultimate boss… turns out to be a hastily-put-together cardboard cut-out of the final boss. Cardboard that shoot lasers, cackles like a frenzied and ghoulish clown, and comes with its distorted own illusion as it pops up around the walls of a self-enclosing moat- nothing but nonsensical fake-outs all the way down. King Kut Out then subverts excess health not with a time limit but by outright trying to ring-out each playable character, tricking the player directly through timing and awkward camerawork in a chaotic locale. Each phase is signaled by breaking off an arm. It’s a ridiculous cartoon gag successfully slid well into a nightmare of a game.

** I have to admit that GDQ’s novelty is starting to wear thin on me, and that I’m kinda busy this weekend, but I was amused enough by watching vods of such external concepts rather than runner perfection- EVO pre-evolution acrobatics, Sonic passing through stages fastest by jumping out of them entirely. I think once one’s familiar with enough runs you kind of either have to have familiarity with the games presented themselves or just get bored of watching someone skim through a game to the best of their ability? Management has always been controversial, anyway. There’s still a little something amusing to watch here, and I hardly protest the runners doing their best in this setting, but it has lost its status as highlight to me (especially when the Awful block is only at AGDQ), and it seems clear the spark has been lost for a bunch of other places.

actually, I haven’t managed - or rather felt the need to tune in to most of GDQ after catching a bit of Nier earlier this week.

However, i think this also has sth to do with changing viewing habits, namely that I tend to catch up on runs days after they happen, at my own pace, instead of being glued to TV/PC. This also, and especially applies for motorracing if it isn’t Le Mans or the Nür 24h (or, soon, Spa 24h),
I guess it has something to do with wanting to be your own master and decide when to spend the time to watch (and dedicate the time?) sth, and not being forced to go out of your way to arrange for watching X from hh:mm to hh+2:mm?

The downside to this approach is that I haven't watched stuff from the 30c3 which has been _three years ago_, and by now some talks of that are already outdated ...

The best runs are the ones that turn ponderous bullshit games into Looney Tunes.

This Brothers run is great.

e: But seriously fuck this gross game.

I’m working on some embroidery while I’m watching and shooting the shit with some of the SA games group so it’s much easier to be tuned in while it’s live.

I haven’t checked but do we still have to hear about saving or killing animals during every run in 2017 or is this thing over

greetings from germany, kill the animals
which is to say: yes, donation messages are the same as they ever were

It’s become so much of its own that somebody’s written a generator for those comments http://taskinoz.com/gdq/

“Another great day of AGDQ. Love watching my childhood animal get destroyed. Money goes to save the donation, donate the frames.”

I thought Brothers was overwrought and undercooked but, you know, fine. Why the bile?

The bit with the girl. It’s so jarringly nasty all of a sudden when the rest of the game has tended wistful-to-maudlin, and it’s so close to saying something about how men think about women but then it’s like, nah, the only living female person in the world was literally a man-eating monster.

Oh yeah, that.

I didn’t even remember that.

It was a weird thing to be introduced to, especially in the context of a speedrun because it barely interacts with her at all until the tunnel where she reveals herself.

Know I am seeing it at bad times but is this one just…really empty?

Yep, an obscure PC game coupled with it being ~5 in the morning over there does not make for populated audiences.

I fell asleep during the run but I hope y’all tuned in to Ghosts’n Demons because oh god that is a gorgeous fangame. I found the runner on accident a couple weeks ago and watched a bunch of his runs because it was so crunchy and entertaining.

it does make me sad though whenever i see that big room empty.
