i thought dragons were cool.
it really is as simple as that, just pick something that you like. could be an animal you think is cute, an aspirational body image thing, a ~kink~, whatever. most furries have like, at least 4 characters, if not more lol, so it’s not like you have to stick with what you pick forever

my current “fursona”, a term i use lightly because it’s an avatar i only use in VR Chat, is a cool girl racoon thing that i got because i looked at nine-trillion vrchat avatars on gumroad and she was the only one who spoke to me. i think it is mostly her jacket tbh
so there’s one way. i am vaguely obsessed with raccoons so it tracks

rarely identify with primates but they do!! there’s someone i follow on cohost who used to have some sort of monkey fursona as their primary 'sona, and she looks cute!
i think it’s funny because if you put a buffet of bizarre options in front of me (dragons, pool toys, about nine thousand types of robots, slime girls, etc.) i just end up picking “sorta-raccoon who fell out of a discovery zone”

yeah. also, more then other fandoms, i think ive seen a lot of pokemon ocs where they just wear a hat or scarf or whatever and thats all thats unique about them and its totally cool. the age of being mad at someone for having a sonic oc who is sonic but purple is dead. well, okay, ive actually seen someone on tumblr get morally upset for the artists at nintendo for just being a pokemon because it’s “stealing their character” or whatever but thats dumb imo its a corporation. be whatever you want. find a picture of a dog and photoshop some groucho marx glasses on it and claim its your fursona. go hog wild.

Bronies were just furries but with a particular subtype. Every single aspect of furry subculture was repeated in bronies, because it was clearly derived from it. The separation was largely pushed by homophobic Channers IMO.
Now that ‘Brony’ as a concept is pretty much dead it’s been absorbed completely by furries, more or less.
…And then Jenny Nicholson did a hit piece on toxicity on Bronies that pretty much said all the toxic shit came from furries and weirdly never mentioned 4chan or princess molestia. Or her own series contributing to that part of Bronydom lol.
( Aside: I will never not be a little cranky about being a childhood fan of the OG show and having that get completely ignored because it was ‘for girls’ unlike…FiM. Yes, it was. It also had demons in evil castles enslaving ponies. It was still a completely unhinged eighties toy commercial cartoon the same way GI Joe and Transformers were. )
I have way too many horse cartoon opinions help.
EDIT: Furries can be toxic too but specifically the video kept blaming furries for everything bad, and being oddly light on the toxic channer stuff.

heres my fursonas so far. pretty much all of them are in my output thread i think
maybe the the most complete and simple one. they just need a name and a very simple rig honestly. i had dreams of porting them into mario 64 at some point? i want to make zines with them at least.
null. worker kobold-looking bee. she lives in an abandoned train stuck in a tree. theres more about her but thats more related to world building for a fantasy thing that hasnt been fully fleshed out but she worked for the god of that world until she decided to adventure on her own. the clothes are still wip (colors absolutely not final) and the yellow orange parts shift around that i can show once shes fully textured.
brisket brambles soda is part of a story im working on to help cope with growing up catholic. probably the one i most relate to right now? or at least most self indulgent. still need texturing, as you can tell. also fixing the head. and rigging. and then making everyone else in her story. and all the places and accessories and
lilith lemonbell is my vtuber avatar and based in y2k aesthetics and maybe my dreams. ive dreamt im a yellow cat several times and idk why. shes mostly done but i need to redesign some things. like making the tamagotchi more shaped like a bell (a lemonbell, even).
this is my pomeranian momo and my first fursona. i have commissioned art of her somewhere but i cant find it right now so here is a bad screenshot of what she looks like in second life instead. i say the deer is most i relate to but my pompom is most like me still, probably.

probably my least complete fursona so far (aside from the ones that dont even have a model/are put together like the one i wanna make based on my anime robot girl OC). very wip but the core idea of a red and white bat clown with a monster mouth tummy is there
maybe someday ill actually complete one of them… as you can tell many of them dont actually have much planned out about their personality or life if at all. you can just make a cool looking OC first and plan out the rest later. or never do and keep moving onto the next one even though you still love the last one just as much because youre indecisive or got cool ideas you wanna explore. or youre a system. or whatever!

Yeah I have zero background. I actually kinda treat my Sonas like Tezuka’s character designs: not the same people but they can be put in stuffin ways that are evocative of an archetype rather than strict character continuity.
At default they’re just representations of me.

i used to know someone with a lemur fursona. lemurs are primates, right?
when fim started and people on the cartoon websites started going crazy for it, i gave it a try, expecting all the fuss to be because it was a fantasy adventure cartoon that happened to have pastel horses as its characters. imagine my disappointment when it turned out to actually be slice of life moe garbage about baking cakes and shit that happened to have pastel horses as its characters

it usually only does proper adventure for season premieres/finales yeah. I recall i was also disappointed by that. It does become a pretty genuinely funny kids slice of life moe garbage show!! (at least up thru s4 where i stopped following) my favorite character was the most moe garbage one of all of them though, so i cannot be trusted

I dunno, I liked enough of it well enough, but it was partially it because I had already liked a prior MLP show as a kid. It was cute! Didn’t watch after season 3 and I’m good with that.
To steer back to the thread topic a bit more, I do like how FIM’s popularity did finally give a lot of furries permission to draw horses in the abstract way most species are, as opposed to horses being inexplicably confined to ONLY SUPER REALISTIC designs that looked really uncanny.
It was always really weird to see like, a cow furry next to a horse furry and see how different the face designs were.

the first thing that drew me to the show was out of context gifs and avatars on forums lol i genuinely find the template pony design really appealing, the bigger eyes and tapered legs are an upgrade from the old/toy designs and just looks so friggin cute to me.
That template design is ofc a major furry magnet cuz making urself a ponysona just means picking earth/unicorn/pegasus pony, giving yourself a color scheme and inventing a cutie mark & a cutesy adjective noun name. like Sleepy Smiles
