So like, how do you even begin to come up with a fursona. It feels like getting a tattoo. I say this as someone who doesn’t have any tattoos though

i have a fursona and i have no clue how to tell anyone else how to make one.
i think it can literally be ANY reason, and some people have like, a ton of different sonas cause they keep trying things out

i didnt overthink it at first i have multiple detailed sonas now but they developed post hoc as i invested more of myself into them
My main recurring sona is a (half-)weasel because i have always had an affinity for weasels and mustelids. Fun fact back when facebook groups were a simple usable idea i had one titled “BBA [my high school] Department of Weasology” where i posted pictures of and facts about mustelids, and invited my friends to do the same. Its probably still extant buried under 15 years of update cruft
more recently i have also developed a love for opossums and found i relate to them a lot! Sometimes people make a separate sona, or decide they want to change theirs. Rather than do that, i made mine a hybrid weasel-opossum. Because you can just do that!! The secret to having a sona is not feeling bound by expectations, species, reality, laws of nature etc.
Ill go even further and say my sona is a shapeshifter so i can have them change with their (aka MY) mood. Your sona is a representation of you in some way or another! It doesn’t even have to be 1:1, it can be totally idealized or exaggerated. The animal can be something you like, something you relate to, something you just though looked cool, it doesn’t even have to be real, or an animal at all

One big difference from tattoos though, is It’s something that you play with and alter and refine, and sometimes grow into.
My blue tigress did not just come out of nowhere. Before I considered myself a furry, I decided to explore furry secondlife by buying a furry avatar. I didn’t know what to get so I picked a fox! And then after a bit, I picked a blue fox. I guess because of Krystal or something.
Eventually, I decided to get a cat. One of the funniest things about all this is I can remember why I picked fox but not the cat. But I was drawn to this gal:
The color just seemed nice, I didn’t think about it much. I started using the avatar more because it was the most technologically up to date one I had.
Time passed, I cycled through fox, human, and tiger a bunch until…I just started picking tigress more and more. Until one day, I noticed…nope, I was the tiger. Nothing else felt better. It surprised me then.
I would update parts, tweak stuff, thought I should be a dude for a while and shifted to being a white tiger, and then I transitioned and went back to blue. I had a weird streak of being orange for a while…but I couldn’t escape the gravity of blue tigress, she was just right.
Now a lot of my avatar work ironically has shifted into evoking the vibe I developed over a literal decade. Even then, she’s still growing. Black Hair over one eye and black stripes really only got hammered out recently.
I consciously chose to move to green eyes over yellow to at least be a little closer to my IRL eyes (blue, but with green notes. Also blue on blue wouldn’t work).
Here’s some iterations and versions:
I guess: pick and animal you like, try a color you like, and then go from there. Feel it out, it doesn’t need to be an all or nothing thing. :3

Yeah — [*]sona-ology is very much the process of making funny creatures you like until you incidentally find one that makes you go “it me??” and then refine it over time until it makes you go “it me!!” There are certainly other ways to go about it, but imo it’s hard to go wrong with the intuitive/iterative approach.

I liked it as a kid, especially the computer game. Not the biggest influence but it’s there if I look.

I still play with some alternate shapes too, for fun and self expression when I want to be a little different. Maybe I’ll go into stuff I figured out from all this later.

i love suggesting sonas to people. ive had friends who have asked “I’d like a fursona but what do YOU think it should be??” and it is fun to answer based on my own perception of that person, what kind of animals they remind me of & that i know they have affinity for. Still IMHO a fursona is ultimately something you claim cuz you identify with it in some way, i can’t really assign one to someone lol
