semi-annual Final Fantasy binge/purge

X was my first and now I barely ever think about it even though it was all the rage locally, when it came out. XII is my favourite and I don’t think it’s gonna change. IV and IX are pretty chill.

I played final fantasy in the order of 7, 8, 4, 6, 5

and none of those are my favorite.
15 is my favorite, though 12 is up there.

I like 9, which I played long after 7 and 8, far more than 7 and 8. Yeah I’m that kind of sicko.

Triple Triad is very good though.

offhand if I were to say make a real lazy post with just a series of numbers I think it would look sth like

9
7
5
6
4
8
12
15

and beneath that the numbered installments aren’t very interesting

while I think 7 and 8 are a lot of fun and basically as classic as the SNES instalments, my favourite squaresoft games are basically “all their PS1 releases that aren’t final fantasy 7 or 8”

suare made all those awesome non-ff ps1 games, and i think chocobo racing was the only one that got a pal release at the time. even their big stuff like chrono cross, xenogears, ff tactics, and legend of mana never came to palsland

oh wait we got ehrgeiz and the first tobal game too

I honestly do not understand why anyone likes 9. I’m sorry. I’ve tried time and time again to get into it but just always lose interest by the end of disc 1.

like it’s very charming, polished, etc., but I just cannot be brought to care about any of the characters, and the battle speed is so excruciatingly slow, and the random encounters so frequent. it just wears me down and never offers a reason to keep going.

say what you will about final fantasy 8 but at least it gives you the ability to completely turn off random encounters fairly early game, and because of the level scaling it’s perfectly viable (and arguably optimal) to use it for most of the game.

I like 1 and 4 and 12. I think I’ve played every single one of the others, including 11 and 14, they just didn’t do much for me.

1 because it was my first exposure to games that weren’t purely reaction-based, and as a kid with no game systems allowed at the house, who only got to play at my friend’s houses and therefore did the “take turns” thing where my turns were about one-twentieth of my friends’, having a game that didn’t rely on prior knowledge and familiarity with the controls was a revelation.

4 because man, Nintendo Power did a good job hyping the shit out of it. Characters with hundreds of HP?!? Right at the start?!? Get outta town! I don’t think I really got to play it until I was in my 20s, possibly even my 30s, it’s just a fun, goofy, not-that-long RPG before they got into the super-maximalist phase that you saw in the later 2D ones.

12, just hit me at the right time in the right place, I think. I do enjoy the Gambit system moreso than most of the other FF battle systems, and I enjoy the art direction.

ETA: Oh and 5 only because of the Four Job Fiesta, which is a neat concept.

Hopefully this link works. I have no idea what the source of this is, I got it randomly off Napster back in the day and can never find it on youtube with seemingly appropriate keywords, but it’s definitely the #1 best chocobo theme

I read the first part of the post and was ready to yell at you then read the rest and here is what I was going to say:

I played the first disc of 9 and had a great time and felt like I didn’t need to go back to it. Also was playing in Japanese. So we are on the same page at least.
