still slaps
I really liked Paladin Cecil’s design as an update/takeoff/reimaging of the Fighter of the first game
Green eyes, purple hair
His hands glow sometimes <3
Wears a neat crown thing
Hair looks slicked down and greasy on the world map
Interesting topic about how Pixel FF3’s mechanics are fairly different from both the OG and DS version, with new abilities, arrows not being consumable anymore, etc

Cyan will maybe be useful in the new FF6
oh yeah this reminds me of the funniest thing about ff2, early game at least, is how when you get rydia you see that she can equip the bow, so it’s like o great maybe she can do more than 1 damage. then you spend lots of money to get her outfitted and realize even though she can use the bow, she absolutely should not
a lot of old final fantasy games are written in such a way where past a given point, maybe give or take a late game sidequest, a given character’s arc is obviously “concluded” and from then on they’re just along with you. FFIV is unique in that it actually kicks them out of the party half the time afterward; tactics ogre / FFT took this a step further by typically only giving in-battle dialogue to characters who were acting in an AI-controlled “guest” capacity and hadn’t yet actually joined up.
Chrono Trigger doing that with Magus is the absolute worst. Because it feels like his arc is decidedly not concluded and it would cause the party to fall apart in recriminations
3 June 1944, if squaresoft plotting applied to world history: De Gaulle magnanimously invites Petain to join his new provisional government
yeah but he’s involved in both of the actually useful triple techs so there
(knowing all of the chrono trigger minmax tips is fun because they’re not needed at all, it’s generally an easy game)
the chrono trigger minmax tips are:
-
robo is terrible when you first get him due to needing magic in the mid-game, and easily one of the 3 best characters by the endgame because he has the only good single tech group heal and can do comparable damage to confuse/luminaire, but you need to bump his speed; his sidequest gets you partway there, and you can steal speed tabs from the wall enemies in the black omen to get the rest
-
give all your magic tabs to ayla because her natural growth is terrible, you’ll have her in your party almost permanently after a certain point, and virtually all of her double techs involve her magic stat
-
lucca is the best character in the game up until you’ve fought the golem boss who is potentially the only challenging late game fight if you haven’t learnt fire2/flare with her, after which she’s not very useful other than to spam the aforementioned magus triple techs for fun while you’re running sidequests
-
marle is probably the least useful character overall but you should toss her into your party anytime you fight one of the movers or other cheap AP enemies because having life 2 by the end of the game makes getting the debug room ending immediately on NG+ relatively trivial
then just spam magus robo lucca triple every fight, love it
one of my fav snes counter intuitive Deep Strats is giving sabin 2x the +mag earrings cos most blitzes scale to mag
and i think he’d look sort of ridiculous or perfect with earrings
Sounds like a good argument for Frog to use to kick out the barely apologetic war criminal. “We don’t desperately need his magic. Lavos is easy peasy if we 100% the sidequests”
Frog’s late game techs are terrible though and needing to equip the Hero Medal to get decent damage output from the Masamune feels like a waste
Ice cold
Instead of Golden Hairpin FFVI should’ve given an Economizer as the treasure for letting Mog die, and this should’ve been the only economizer in the game. It would’ve created a legendary perpetual debate between the minmax faction and the i-have-a-soul faction
economizer still isn’t as important to quality of life as the moogle charm
(plus I love that they gave him TWO relics that make him a jumping dragoon, and there’s the whole umaro recruitment thing, just a great goofy edge case character)
what’s up with “tab” anyway. is it like tablet? mario rpg has flower tabs too, top of my head
thanks chrono trigger for introducing me to the word “bromide” and thanks lunar for showing me what that word meant a few years later
Yeah I thought everyone was popping pills
i like to presume blotter sheets exist in Chrono Trigger’s world
