Anyone else fondly remember the late-game Anima summon from FFX? Every other summon was like an elegant spirit of the Elements but this one was some kind of demon fishman permanently held down in a straitjacket of chains and the icon of a saint on a necklace.

Since it was fully chained, its normal attack in battle was to just kinda briefly stare at the targeted enemy, and there was no animation of laser/flashing eyes or anything like that, it would just look at them and do like 7000 damage.

Summoning this guy back into the world in order to dispatch an annoying poison enemy one turn faster, seems fine to me

actually the eye would flash and its head would like snap back when it was popping chuds. also there was like another guy on its ass chupon style (shout out to @Mothra) and that one did a lot of punches i think. also i’m pretty sure the whole thing is seymour’s mom or something

good summon

The name “Seymour” always reminded me of Principal Skinner, and I think the connection stuck in my mind because both characters’ attempts to project authority are vaguely pathetic

Sadly enough, I haven’t truly loved a final fantasy since (PSX) V…

(or CC…)

replaying final fantasy iv (2 us) because of this thread

I feel like 4 is the benchmark but it goes unrecognized by anyone who isn’t old enough to remember 9/11

4 rules. I think it’s my favorite.

I’ve never gotten over my disappointment that Cecil’s big makeover winds up making his sprite and abilities much less cool-looking

It’s like if Darth Vader changed back into Hayden Christensen

DK Cecil always looked a bit dorky to me, like Kain’s less cool younger brother or something. He can’t even jump, let alone use Darkness if he’s American. Even his stat growth is somewhat disappointing.

Paladin Cecil has majestic white hair and Cover and has to start all the way back at level 1 (levelling up extremely rapidly in the process), which in my young mind just made him the coolest.

I will grant you that, post-promotion, he becomes a much flatter character in terms of the story (tho really that’s true of most of the characters in the game (I love FF4 fwiw)).

The SNES FFs came out when I was 10-12 years old, which is the edgelord phase of childhood so playing as a villain was my jam. I played a lot of Star Wars: TIE Fighter and from my perspective, FFVI never got better than when you barge into Narshe on imperial mechs

The beginning happens a lot faster than I remember, probably because I am not an impatient child who is bad at videogames. I also remember being utterly shocked and confused by the destruction of mist, which is hilarious considering how heavily telegraphed it is.

This game reminds me that one of my favorite jrpg gimmicks is when characters you encounter are leveled according to plot and character reasons instead of either just starting at one or being matched to your level.

yeah FFIV still has a lot of D&D and wizardry in there, levels and classes and MP totals are often used as effectively fixed attributes of characters who join you, it’s a lot more scenario driven than later minmaxy stuff, most party members’ stats are heavily skewed in one direction or another to emphasize the differences.

the world map music is also very underrated imo, it’s very wary, doesn’t sound much like uematsu

FWIW, despite the SNES translation’s many faults, it at least had the sense to name the package you deliver “Package” instead of “Explodey Ring of Death that Will Kill Everyone”

“wary” is an interesting word. I just re-listened to a few seconds of each and I feel like the overworld themes in FFs II to V all deliberately hold back from getting too soaring. FF II and V go for an eerie, haunting vibe and FF III and IV are heroic but with a question mark.

Starting in FFVI the music retains some of the same signatures but it can no longer resist getting carried away with enthusiasm

I can never judge FF6 objectively because it was so important to me as a lonely 9 year old. I think a lot of games that are important to me are because of being lonely and playing them at those specific times in my life. I think I never finished it because I didn’t want to stop spending time with the characters.

Hi, replace ff6 with DQ1 and this is me.
