In 9 you get to fly like three different airships plus a Chocobo. Also it has Moogles all over the place how dead inside are you that Moogles don’t do it for you.
It sucks that Moogle sounds like Muggle fuck Harry Potter.
Despite completing the game I remember more about Mognet and the Moogle letter delivering side quest than I do about the actual story. But aren’t most of them like that anyway?
As a kid I remember every other RPG series being vaguely disappointing in an unidentifiable way, and looking back it’s because they lacked the build up and climax of getting a new vehicle in a Final Fantasy. The series really knew (from FF3 on anyway) how to make getting a new vehicle a joy and not an immense new burden upon the player
No one really realizes how many ridiculous vehicles / mounts are in FF I’ll try to list them all
1 introduced the canoe, boat and airship
2 introduced chocobos (regular and flying) and a weird sled
3 had a submarine with an ocean floor to explore, and multiple disposable airships. At one point your boat gets chained to a port offscreen and the realization is a cool memorable moment of powerlessness
4 had the regular airship, the drill airship and the space airship
5 has a dragon and at one point you get a giant claw attached to your airship to grab and move your boat around
6 is a huge disappointment. The world 7 map is ugly and confusing and we should have been able to fully explore the underworld with the Figaro castle
7 had a buggy and new chocobo colors, with extreme breeding mechanics behind them that will eat 10 hours of your time and that’s with a strategy guide
8 had the useless bus in that one city, the train in which you kill the president, multiple kinds of rental cars that had to be manually filled with expensive oil, and a giant floating academy
I don’t remember whether FF9 delivers on that front but it apparently did
10 and 13 are understandably too explicitely linear for vehicles to work
12 had, on one hand, teleport stones, and on another, pointless airship cruises between cities that only seemed to exist to plead to the player for the charm of these dumb airships over the convenience of fast travel
I’m sure 14 delivers here
15 was all about a car and I should have seen it coming
always thought it was funny that the reputation was that dragon quest was stodgy and traditional while final fantasy was progressive and flashy but dragon quest had fast travel in 1986 while final fantasy refused to include even a much more limited version of it until 2001
My fingers are crossed that at some point Sqare Enix will pull a DQXI and give the fans an no-frills mainline FF in the IV-IX vein. Make some production compromises in order for a fully open world that you can fly an airship through. I don’t care if that requires having a separate area for battles or if I gotta walk around the map as a chibi the size of a town.
