its the weird flesh thing on a turkey
We have a 420-post thread about TLOU and I think thatās just one of the two big threads we had (canāt find the other one right now). And a lot of praise and personal connection in it. I think it wouldāve ended up in some lists if the subsequent Naughty Dog and TLOU2 revelations didnāt make the recollection of it curdle in our minds and recenter on the worst possible interpretations of what sort of game it was all along
There were more nominations for Grandias than Grand Theft Autoes
Things got weird
I think styling it as peopleās āfavorite gamesā bent the list in a useful and positive way. Like you may think TLOU is a good game, but who would call it one of their favorite games. Oh hell yeah, time to reinstall TLOU and blast through that romp one more time, itās a summer tradition!
17 nominations for Tetris and 23 for Dark Souls so we canāt be accused of simply avoiding the cliched obvious nominations for the sake of pure eclecticism, either.
I think itās that the generic ābiggest/best/most fun/most impressive game everā ambitions of the likes GTA and Uncharted aged poorly. They get exceeded by the next thing along, and then thereās seemingly not much left.
I think GTA can and will be reassessed/salvaged though, and maybe even Uncharted, but weāre not there yet in 2020.
Iād like to point out that Puyo Puyo did not make it on the list, but 8 people independently nominated Puyo games. Tigress said whichever is the most voted for (Puyo Tetris), two people said āPuyo Popā i.e. Minna de Puyo Puyo for GBA, and Bachelor and I said Puyo Tsu (the correct answer).
I feel these deserve to be grouped together a la Tetris, because not a single Puyo game being on the list while Tetris gets a free go is fucking criminal and Iām quitting the forum otherwise
as an extension of this, and I think Bachelor agrees, we should just group games in the same series in order to diversify our top 64 and make it more interesting.
personally I think bloodborne should not be grouped with the dark souls series, nor should demonās souls. but I would like to have this discussion publicly
In fairness there would have been a lot more normie console picks if Iād gotten off my high horse and stopped insisting on only nominating PC games
I would have voted for Puyo Tsu, though Iām awful at Puyo in general. It has the best music and competitive play makes me go crosseyed like a puyo stuck in the middle.
Iām terrible at Puyo Tsu compared to the modern titles and if that disqualifies my opinion that they should be grouped together then
I disagree though? Especially with Nintendo series, thereās usually a lot of variance. Zelda 1 and Majoraās Mask have almost nothing in common besides some aesthetic connections. Super Metroid and Metroid II have very different design philosophies despite being made by largely the same team only a handful of years apart.
Like, for instances, Street Fighter 2 got grouped together which I 100% agree with because all 500 versions of Street Fighter 2 are still āStreet Fighter 2ā
Games that are purely mechanical and have little to no story involvement, like the DDR and Beatmania series, would have been nominated enough to make the list if they had been grouped together, but they didnāt
So yeah I wouldnāt group things together purely on series title, but there should be some agreement among us as to which games are rooted in gameplay enough to be considered more or less the āsame gameā among installments
I almost agree with you about Bloodborne and Demons Souls shouldnāt be included in the Dark Souls series. But I also donāt think all the Dark Souls games should be bundled, specifically because I think if Dark Souls 2 lands above either of the other two games, judging from some of the conversations Iāve seen around here, it would be for reasons other than it being just another good entry. I donāt know if this makes sense, but I think a lot of people see DS2 almost as individual as Bloodborne or Demons Souls. I know that I do.
Also put whatever this is:
Okay then I just think Dark Souls 1 and 3 specifically are the same game because itās basically Miyazaki getting his free mulligan
Thatās what I think about those two as well.
Yeah I think itās silly to group together all the Zeldas and Sonics and Metal Gears and such but it may be worth looking at all the arcade-style games that may have fallen through the cracks cuz their votes were scattered across different revisions.
Like doing a play-in where you pit Silent Hill 2 vs Silent Hill 3 or all the 2D Sonics or Marios against each other so we have more room for non-Single Player Epics would result in a more diverse, interesting list.
Cuz there are currently like 22+ games tied for 55th place and some of those gotta go.
What Iām saying here is if we take all the Puzzle Bobble noms and give them to the true originator of that gameplay concept we could possibly have a Snood vs. Dog Days grand final.
Edit: Like Tetris games got 21 nominations but there is no Tetris game in this top 77 Cania and I compiled. I think a top 64 without Tetris is very funny but only one game got more than 21 nominations soā¦
I guess it depends how granular you want to get. Tetris has some pretty big variations depending on the version youāre looking at. But I can also understand the desire to group things for the sake of a more far-reaching conversation.
Arguably it makes comparisons difficult for games that only have a single entry in their āseriesā.
I know that if the spotlight was, once again, wrested from We Love Katamari and unfairly given to its inferior prequel my heart might just give out. I think there are always reasons people pick one game in a series over another.
