I’m co-signing this with my life. Bully has such a great soundtrack it made me feel wistful for my childhood in 2006 when I was not-a-child-not-yet-an-adult and only more so as each year passes. Sometimes I put the soundtrack on just to listen to it.
There have been a lot of rumors that a sequel is in development but who knows if it will ever come together. Supposedly what’s been developed already takes place at a university instead of a preparatory school but I don’t remember if you were still playing as Jimmy or a new character.
Also they never mention it in the game but Bully takes place in the year 1995 and I think that’s tops.

64-bit Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days A continuous stream of savage nihilism through multiple layers of broken remove anchored in the facsimile of outdated media
s-tier
Earthbound: as far as i know still the only game where you, the player, personally kill the last boss
Riven: it’s incredible that cyan made a hypercard stack feel like a real, explorable place
Super Mario 64: i was 6 and had only ever played NES so a 3D video game felt impossible. it’s my favorite Mario game
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus: i like them both for mostly the same reasons. and im a purist and think they need to be played on ps2 especially shadow. It needs to be slow and blurry and like a hazy dream
Super Smash Bros: melee is a better fighting game but i love ssb64. it feels sludgy in a good way and i love the chunky models. Fat pikachu is the strongest character.
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne: it’s the Swiss watch of JRPGs and maybe the coolest looking game?
Dork Souls 2: look if im honest 4 out of 5 games in the series belong on my list (and the 5th… is okay!) but i wanted to pick the underappreciated one, and I think it represents the soul(s) of the series best, maybe only rivaled by demons souls. it’s also the one i turned around on the most and it made me earnestly think more critically about my own knee jerk reactions to media so thanks dark souls 2
Katamari Damacy: (you now have katamari on the rocks stuck in your head.)
A-tier
Deus Ex: i just finished a playthrough of this the other day and damn how didn’t i realize sooner this is one of my favorite games? it’s such a perfect mix of dorky and actually cool. I like the sneaking and shooting and whatever but my favorite parts were just walking around the dark streets of Hong Kong at night. why isn’t literally every game about that.
DOOM:
King’s Field IV The Ancient City: it’s my favorite game about walking really slowly down dark tunnels
Resident Evil 2: i think Claire is cool and i wish i owned her jacket
Soulcalibur VI: it has a surprisingly good 1 player mode and an amazing character creator and is simply a really fun fightmans game. i play very few of those and i got so hooked on this one
Night in the Woods: probably my favorite “walking sim” type game that’s more about telling a story than gaming a game (though the optional dungeon crawler is rly cool!!). the style of the art and writing was right in the pocket for me
Hollow Knight: i love bugs. they’re creepy and they’re cute and they’re cool. this is a good game for me because it also loves bugs. it’s also a very good search action game, that feels like it makes the link between post-symphony castlevanias and souls games without knocking off either too obviously
shiren the wanderer: if you love this game it’s probably for the same exact reasons i do. idk what else to say. it’s a really great roguelike and probably my personal favorite one.
mother 3: what if earthbound was a more mechanically fun game with a more on the nose story? it’s a pretty good ending
B-tier
mother: what if earthbound was a less fun game with a more vague, weirdly melancholy story? oh, and exploding enemies are still there, but you have no rolling hp. it’s a pretty good start
okage: shadow king: surprised at how much i remembered about this when i replayed it recently, and how much it influenced me? maybe if it was a better game or i was cooler, this would have been my earthbound instead of earthbound
dragons dogma: Capcom make deep down you fucking cowards
undertale: hmm im seeing a pattern w/r/t narratively inventive, mechanically dicey jrpgs. This is the most mechanically sound, probably… the most overrated game that i’d still say is really good and worth playing. the meta stuff is still effective imo
kingdom hearts: i know it’s a whole thing now but i think we forget what a weird crossover this was? i had no idea wth they were thinking at the time. and i stopped caring when the series expanded its story with a bunch of shonen villains (if i wanted to watch bleach i’d just watch bleach!) but i loved this dumb game when i was a kid. there are so many parts with weird/bad flagging and every level feels like a big empty Disney film set, i found it bizarrely memorable
uru: ages beyond myst: i think it stinks that online co-op adventure gaming never took off. controlling this game feels awful but it’s a cool myst sequel full of sadly unrealized potential
legendo zeldo: majora mask: the best 3D zelda before wild breath. it has big hostile pc game energy. we don’t talk enough about how it was developed under a severe time crunch, and how effectively the developers communicated that sheer stress into the games mechanics lol. underrated dungeons.
morrowind: for a game that looks and often feels like you’re inching your way through mud i sure do love morrowind. especially when you can jump out of the mud and fly around the world like superman, a thing i should be absolutely sick of doing in games, and yet this medium lets me down again and again. why did i even make this list
sonic 3 and knuckles: specifically with a patch that puts the sonic 3 music back in. and cheats so you can skip carnival night zone. and playing as tails. it’s a kickass game if you do all that
there are definitely others i could add but this feels like enough
i didnt actually forget marathon 2 i was just pretending to in order to piss off durandal and get spawned 100 feet underwater with a sliver of oxygen
marathon 2
Oh shit Metal Storm!
I forgot my favorite looking game on the NES
Agressive tiling and paralax to make sci-fi hardware environments into surrealism
Not sure if it’s kosher to post a link as its creator wanted it delisted, but found it here
- Death Stranding
- The Silver Case
- Dynamite Cop II
- Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
- STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl
- Typing of the Dead
- Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin
- Sunless Sea
- Spelunky
- Receiver – some people talk about books like they’re machines with deliberate affects, but few people want to get this pretentious about games but i think receiver tried to. if any video game might result in your transcendence, either spiritually or in an image-of-thought psychological sense, i think receiver could do it.
- Garry’s Mod – this was the zeitgeist of my youth, and you don’t escape that shit so easily. find me in gm_bigcity and rp_hometown1999
- Pathologic 2
- Arx Fatalis
- Batman Arkham Asylum – what a treat for a batman fan. the greatest animated series game you could ever ask for. so concise too, unlike all its sequels (maybe except for Origins).
- Hitman (2017 or 2)
- Killer7
- INSIDE. – the graphix, the soundz and the BLOBS. AHHHHHHH I STILL THINK ABOUT THIS ENDING ALL THE TIME WHAT THE FUUUUUUUU
- Postal 2 – Postal 2’s humor fucking blows, most of the time, but I appreciate its scope of design and I respect it as a immersive sim.
- Return of the Obra Dinn – one of the best games ever made, and a game to be played only once! how sad.
- Resident Evil 3 – the coolest art, the coolest action flair. all the randomization elements make this game super replayable, while its already the most fun and fast of the PS1 RE games to play.
- Resident Evil Remake
- The Sims – very fond of this quirky sandbox. very fond.
- Thumper
- XCOM 2
- Planescape: Torment – despite being super popular, very little of this game has a familiar appeal. I often think about how looking at it, like the city and the decorations, the geometry and geography, gives me the feeling of looking at something truly alien.
- Disco Elysium
- Psychonauts – I don’t really like the Naughty Dog or Insomniac Games style of 3D character platformer, so as a distinction I love this game. But it’s also super cute, a really well written comedy, and beautiful. A game I love to recommend people who don’t play a lot of games.
- Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs – this is my kind of purple gothic horror. it’s an abysmal game to play. so boring. but the acting and the writing is so so good imo. turning the 20th century into a eldritch horror is the coolest fucking idea i have ever heard in my whole damn stupid life.
- I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream – I love when literature is adapted into a video game, and I love the liberties this took with the short story. It’s not the best game, not the best adaptation, but I think of it as an example I can point to of what I consider the best practice in adapting a work.
- Yakuza 2 – this is the best yakuza game. two tigers, and many Koreans.
- Space Funeral
- LISA: The Painful RPG – this game may not be genius, but it looks like it’s made by someone who is genius. all the art and writing and music and design was made by one dude, and it all seems so unique (superficial Earthbound-like criticisms aside, which have their points). it also manages to say a lot more about shitty masculinity than I’ve ever seen any other game try to. and it’s hilarious all the while.
- ANATOMY – maybe this is a cope, because I’ve spent so much time writing about the game, but I legitimately think it’s a beautiful piece of horror that is intimate in both an uncomfortable and confiding sort of way.
!!!
I kinda want to add something by 별바람 크리처 Byulbram Creature on here.
Am I remembering correctly that the Bloody Cross 2003 demo for GP32 had internet multiplayer, even though the GP32 didn’t have any internet functionality? You had to plug the GP32 into a computer and use it’s internet connection.
Either way, it was a really solid 2 button fighting game that showed a lot of promise, and was super interesting at the time.
-Bloody Cross 2003 demo (GP32)
sorry for your hellish life, jellicle
What’s the best way to currently play Psychonauts? I had been think of replaying it
I don’t know for sure but I would guess the Steam version. It’s a pretty standard port, but it has controller support and runs on Windows 10 in my experience. I don’t think it’s been re-released on any of the current consoles sadly.
oh yeah i said id post my reasons
dyad - i think this game was made for me. i mean teh developer that i had never talked to before messaged me on twitter with a code and I THINK YOU’LL LIKE IT at four in the morning so thats already extremely my shit. but RAINBOW DEATH TUNNELS AND JEFF MINTER REFRENCES make the best game ever, just ever

bank panic - this games controls work so fucking well in mame on a keyboard i couldnt stop playing it for like 5 fucking months, i still get the song (its some whistling dixie bullshit but 1980s arcade sounding) stuck in – ITS STUCK IN MY HEAD RIGHT NOW
i, robot - all my votes go to the NON GAME half of this game. i mean i should give it two votes because the worlds first fully 3d experience realized part is neat too but DOODLE CITY called itself a UNGAME (a fucking UNGAME!! WHO SAYS THAT???) in 1984 and should post here. also it came out a day after my literal day of birth and was delayed because of some insane car accident in front of moffet field that made my conspiracy bowtie spin
blaster -
paradise is whirling babes
edf xbox 360 (the bargain bin one) - WOW THIS BARGAIN BIN GAME IS A REAL GAME HOLY SHIT IM GOING TO ONLY BUY FROM THE BARGAIN BIN FOR A WHOLE THREE YEARS
pressure cooker - you bounce ingredients you dont want off your belly. my favorite sorting game
killer 7 - I GOT TO ONE SIDE.
saints row 2 - going back to this after saints row 3 and beyond really makes it a lot better? like the writing is constrained in a way the later games arent that actually add to it. OH ALSO THE CHARACTER CREATION IS PERFECT
steambot chronicles - bumpytrot! bumpytrot! bumpytrot!
grandia 2 - i gave my reason when i nominated yume nikki but also AUGH GOD I LOVE THE BATTLESYSTEM AND THE CHUNKY CHARACTER MODELS
r type - first horizontal shooter i beat a level in. i like how perfect it demands you be
god hand - I HAVE A SHIRT OF IT LIKE A DORK SO I MUST FUCKIJNG LOVE IT
mach breakers - I LOVE THE SEQUEL TO TRACK AND FIELD WHERE YOU CATCH MISSLES AND THROW THEM BACK INSTEAD OF JUMP OVER BORING HURDLES!!! in fact ithink the hurdle event is you bust through blocks of ice. good job making track and field controls interesting
final fantasy tactics - i feel like i locked myself in my room for three months to play this game and avoid my boyfriend, me and this game trauma bonded
bauldurs gate dark alliance 2 - ITS SO FUCKING AMAZINGLY GOOD EXCEPT WHEN IT BLOWS TOTAL CHUNKS
paper mario ON THE WII - i dont get why people hate this game i think it rules, i love how padded it is everything feels like an ordeal i loved taking my time with it
street fighter 2 turbo - im the least bad at this one, so its going in as my vote
warioware twisted - i was denied membership into a videogame snob livejournal community because i said this was one of my top five games. it will ALWAYS be on my top lists to spite those assholes but also because i know its because everyone blew this game off as a shitty giimmick when i think warioware has the most personality out of all the nintendo shit, MONA PIZZZZAAAAAAAA
skate or die 2 - HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ME GUSH ABOUT THE RAMP MODE? OH YOU HAVE BECAUSE I ALWAYS FUCKING DO IT? i do it because the ramp mode is just that fucking good the fucking trick variety on a nes controller made me nut through the tv screen and the gore RULES i love to try to do a flip and instead split my body open starting at my skull on the spine of a ramp
portrait of ruin - SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN! SCARLETT! JONATHAN!
Yeah,
Air Fortress
Oh I’m adding Devotion to my list because that game is SO COOL and has such amazing spaces in it! It’s a real shame what happened to it.
And Sonic R because of the unbeatable soundtrack and because I played it while eating Bagel Bites and watching Hey Arnold on another screen. That game is, to me, 90’s trash pop aesthetics elevated to a higher plane.
Seconding I, Robot for those primordial polygons and two games + one non-game in one game and it’s wild that this was a thing that ever existed in an arcade.
How many of you have been editting your posts can’t wait to read this thread again.
