selectbutton.net's top 64 vidcons 2020 - THE NOMINATION

Shenmue
Radiant Silvergun

whatever the results of this whole endeavor (which is great thank you for taking initiative @anonymous), i really really love reading people’s lists. tis all worth it for that alone even imo

The game itself is ooookay but the theming is incredible. A game where you take on the pain of others by literally transforming into their lost loved ones and filling their roles one last time. A game of overwhelming urgency and grief, where even though you have infinite time you still can’t fix everything. A game about losing your friends and actualizing your subsequent destructive urges into a world-destroying calamity. Where the only ones who can save you and the world are the friends you drove away. It’s so fucking gooooood

I cry when I listen to this:

I originally had No Man’s Sky in this spot, but Noctis IV does everything I wanted NMS to do, just at a lower resolution (and with much greater difficulty to get the damn thing running). Just read @lonelyfrontier’s post about this game on her blog, i wouldn’t be able to match it: http://lonelyfrontier.net/noctis.html

And ADD IT TO YOUR LIST GOSH DAMNIT

This is the best defense of Majora’s Mask.

Somehow I forgot that Pikmin counts (not the 3DS one as sort of a puzzle platformer) so we’re good as far as I’m concerned

All the RTSes I can think of I have enjoyed, but not enough to return to either mentally or actually. I replayed some of Red Alert recently and it was a total nostalgia trip, but something about RTSes simply does not stick in my mind.

Pikmin excepting, of course, but I feel that this barely counts.

I think Starcraft is elsewhere in this thread though! I guess I think of that game a lot, but mostly the custom maps. I don’t care for the actual game that much.

Also the next person who says that Tower Defense games originated with Warcraft 3 custom maps: I see you, and I’m thinking about how wrong you are. Just really picturing the wrongness.

this is me dunking on a couple of podcasters not anybody here

Oh jeez, yeah, Starcraft is mentioned earlier in the thread. And other games I’m not familiar with probably slipped by me.

I can see why as a genre they would kind of blend together/be unremarkable. Maybe for me they immediately scratch the armchair general/world-dominating itch in an accessible way because in 90s-early aughts RTSes you just had to focus on survival, resources and expansion whereas other types of strategy games that I cared to have some awareness of seemed like they had too many systems for me to wrap my head around.

I nominated Dota 2, which is a Fantasy Action Real Time Strategy game. I think more people should nominate it, so it can make the list, and represent its genre, and maybe win the entire thing. Thank you.

The RTS nominee should be guilty gear 2: overture

We did a podcast on Noctis on gamers quarter way back when. Pretty sure that’s where the phrase ā€œlonely gameā€ originated, or popped up early on before it became a way to describe a game.

Note to @anonymous, all my picks are in the post I’m replying to here PLUS these Final Hour Five for a golden total of 69 (thanks!)

  • Rockford
  • Magic Wand
  • I, Robot
  • Solar Jetman
  • Spy Party

Edit: I’ve also added the 5 here to my master list, so it’s all in that one.

I think I’ve got everything I want in there without engorging my post with too many multiples from the same series. Good luck to the nominees, there are some very fine candidates here.

Thanks @anonymous for putting in the effort!

I finally rounded out my list to 64, yeah baby

I went too far and picked about 90-odd games in no order because I forgot loads of games and just copied from everyone else so I’m sorry. Also my writing just dribbles out at the end because I rushed it all.

01-10

01 Street Fighter Alpha 3

Alpha 3 is the funnest and therefore best Street Fighter, especially 2-player Dramatic Battle against top difficulty CPU. I’m sad there hasn’t been a definitive version as the Alpha Collection, Dreamcast version and PSP(?) version all have advantages over each other. There probably never will be a complete edition :frowning:

02 GIRP

This is Foddy’s best?? It’s difficult but manageable, with an organically rising difficulty throughout and gives a real sense of achievement or utter disappointment at the end that few other games succinctly achieve.

03 NIGHTs: Into Dreams

Still excellent. I still never got the weird mutant angel-babies with ā€˜A-Life’ which took up nearly all of the Saturn’s internal memory FFS.

04 Outrun 2

It’s exactly what people in the past thought a future version of the game would be. Perfecto.

05 Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown

It’s the ultimate virtual fight. I’m a Wolf boy myself. LM was a beast with Shun. Come back.

06 Binding of Isaac

I honestly hate how the themes are explored in this game, which is very juvenile and pretty distasteful in some remarks. But the gameplay loop is excellent and moreish.

07 Cave Story

What everyone else said.

08 Undertale

And this. I’m too scared to do a genocide run.

09 Streets of Rage 2

I know the music in SoR 1 + 2 are ripped off from late 80s/early 90s bangers but they translate so bloody well for the setting. A great co-op game.

10 Marvel vs Capcom

The limited roster compared to other games in the series makes this better and more focussed? Like the love put into the music for each character.

11-20

11 Dark Savior

I’m sad this game has not been revisited in any way; there’s an amazing write-up by Mama Robotnik on resetera somewhere, which made it even more of a gem for me. Its multiple scenarios make this an incredible affair.

12 Crazy Taxi

I think I played one run for nearly 2 hours once. Prime Sega fucking nailed the one-more-go factor. Bring it back! Again!

13 The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

It’s very unfinished but it had the most comforting vibes in a Zelda.

14 Yakuza 6: The Book of Life

I feel like this is the best one. And I really like the Baseball game, despite not knowing anything about the sport. I’m sad that the pool from Yakuza 0 never made it.

15 Bloodborne

In addition to what everybody else has said: the challice dungeons are brilliant. A bit limited, but really enjoyable to go through constantly fresh dungeons with an album playing in the background. Also the bonesaw you get at the beginning is the best weapon, but a lot of others have their own merits.

16 Demon’s Souls

I love its arcade style level setup the most. It still feels like a game I never understood all the mechanics for, even if I played it loads. Unbalanced games are fun.

17 Amplitude (PS2)

It’s probably the best iteration of the games Harmonix have done, since Frequency still feels a little iffy. The most recent version had some absolute shit stinking up the bonus tracks thanks to some musically illiterate kickstarter backers, which really affected its overall quality (even if the main setlist is very good overall).

18 Wario Ware: Inc

The first time I played this I went a bit wild? Like I had a 2 minute shower afterwards and do other tasks around the house in limited scope. It really reduced games down to core elements and ran with it.

19 Skate 2

It’s the best one.

20 Resident Evil 4

When I went to buy the Game Cube version, I crashed my car after skidding on a part of a roundabout with oil slick on the road, so that fucking sucked. Or maybe I was just really excited to play the game with the Wiimote? The best single player Resi. Super fun.

21-30

21 Canis Canem Edit/Bully

I was sad this never got a sequel; the more focused approach on a small town really allowed more to shine. The minigames were a bit shit but the close-knit approach gave it a lot more character.

22 Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

It’s also the best one? Even if Soma is pretty annoying.

23 Rock Band

Probably the series in all, but I honestly believe the first game had the most balanced playlist. A shame it fizzled out and didn’t include some artists that would’ve shone brightly, but great multiplayer magic.

24 Everybody’s Golf: World Tour

Tight and pure and whatever. Was pretty annoyed with the PS4 offering.

25 Bayonetta

One of my favourite soundtracks ever. Just a really magical experience.

26 Glittermitten Grove

It is a kind of ā€˜lol random’ game but everything is given love. And when it’s got love it shines, regardless of how it’s presented. ā€œMy eleventh yearā€ is a banger and actually quite difficult to find, making it more special.

27 Chrono Trigger

I’ve only ever played this on an emulator with frame skip, which I think makes it far better for skipping some tedium. Is it made better with the Woolsey translation? Probably. He did good work.

28 Sonic Mania

It is the ultimate Sonic mashup. Everything’s so lovingly done.

29 Jet Set Radio

They got the vibe well. Wildly I think it could have been tighter or more complicated with its controls. I’m sad there aren’t more games with rollerskates tbh.

30 Toy Commander

It definitely shows its age but I loved Toy Commander. A puzzle based game with miniature vehicles doing stuff around the house. A modern version would be ace.

31-40

31 Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 or THUG 2 whatever

THPS was one of the most important games ever, I absolutely believe that. I feel like it absolutely opened up the possibilities of engagement with sport, and even alternative cultures, outside the most popular stuff to people who never previously considered it. Yeah, there’s always posers and pretenders who can falsely inflate popularity but even the concept of just considering different things has massively helped redefine (western) cultures in general. Anyway, I spent the most time with THUG 2 so that’s why I went with that one.

32 Olli Olli 2

Continuing skateboards, I was once the best player in the world at this (yes! I was the first to hit 100 million total points), I’ve no idea how things are now since I stopped playing once Ray died. Best played on Vita due to its lack of input lag.

33 Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)

From the arcade version, which was on par with Tekken 3 graphics and basic game modes, to a fully fledged affair on the Dreamcast, with bonus characters, mission mode, fan art unlocks, lovely graphics etc. it was a perfect game for the time. An incredible port.

34 Journey

It’s just a really wonderful trip. Also play Abzu which is the same concept but underwater.

35 Animal Crossing (Gamecube)

For whatever reason I bought my GC with me to Spain on holiday in 2005. It made me realise how I use videogames to entertain myself a lot since Ulcerative Colitis has taken away so many other opportunities and my eventual normal was actually not normal. The holiday was okay but it reminded me of how stressful I get in unfamiliar places looking for public toilets. The holiday was okay but I split up with my then girlfriend as soon as I got home because I realise I just couldn’t manage myself or grow as I wanted to. Animal Crossing was a weird staple of that time, giving me a ā€˜normal’ life where I couldn’t actually have one. I still find the character design the most charming of all versions.

36 Super Metroid

I still can’t believe how good the music is?? I always think how platform games work better with chibi-style characters and SM just about works in spite of that rule. Always felt odd how the camera didn’t move properly when you got hit.

37 Mashed

Mashed felt like it had a lot missing, like a decent campaign or gameplay variability. Still, one of my fave competitive couch games ever.

39 Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition

Resident Evil 5 was racist. In many aspects. I genuinely think it was mostly tone deafness rather than Ubisoft-style intention, but it really soured things. Mercenaries Reunited is one of the greatest couch co-op games though. Pity you’ve got to throw the main campaign to unlock it.

40 Gitaroo Man

Mostly the Legendary song alone tbh.

41-50

41 Klonoa 2

Some of the music in this game made me cry and that’s why it’s here.

42 Quake

Still so fucking good. It seems stripped down by today’s standards but that’s why it works. Minimal fluff in a way. Really fucking good.

43 Devil May Cry 3

I really like the rival twin thing. It’s relatable.

44 Umjammer Lammy

I’m sticking this in over Parappa because the soundtrack resonated with me more. Every level (except the daycare one) has a banger.

45 Steep Slope Sliders

All my memories of this are of eerie isolation with a wild soundtrack. And the wild hidden characters. Genuinely feels like it takes me to another world, which is a wild achievement.

46 Hotline Miami

It’s crass and immature but it’s a good ride. Shame about the long-distance levels which didn’t really work. Banging soundtrack.

47 Kid Chameleon

This is most metal game I’ve ever played. It’s not overegged, like Brutal Legend, it hits you when you least expect. Like the hell levels, the bosses, the big fuck-off wall off death chase levels and the gutteral ā€˜Die’ when you fall to your doom. It balances its brutality and invention and time for a little reflection really well.

48 Blasphemous

As far as metroidvanias go, Blasphemous is grand. It’s use and handling of Catholic themes/imagery is flipping wild and exactly what I like to see in my games sometimes: explicit interpretations of orthodox Christianity in a way which is itself blasphemous. One gripe is that I think the executions are needlessly brutal as they don’t even feel cathartic, or add much to the tale. But golden otherwise.

49 Tokyo Jungle

The real animal crossing? This feels really unfinished but still engaging and I’m sad Sony never went further. There’s definitely a franchise in there.

50 Sekiro

It’s a wild ride that grows with your own skills. I must admit I’ve never been the biggest fan of feudal Japan since a lot of designs can be very busy, but then I’m mostly used to European castles which aren’t the easiest thing to digest at the best of times.

51-60

51 Peggle

It’s a good, pure puzzle game, though I’m sick of Ode to Joy now.

52 Shovel Knight

I’m forever weary of retro-pixel whatever games doing their best to evoke some false memories, but SK is so well-executed. And stonkingly huge with its 4 games.

53 Divekick

Dive v Kick face-off replaced the coin toss in my last place. It’s a game for everyone.

54 The Sims

The original game had the right amount of action for me. Was great in a family sharing a computer, until my guy visitors just kept going into the garden and dying, annoying everyone else.

55 Diddy Kong Racing

It’s the best kart racer. The single-player was exactly what a campaign should consist of. I never did unlock TT though.

56 Wonder Boy in Monster Land

This has long been my comfort game. It’s just friendly! Also it has that racist section with tribesmen throwing spears at you, which is completely awful, but it’s nice otherwise.

57 Super Bomberman 5

I never got around to playing Saturn Bomberman, so this felt like the ā€˜best of’ SNES game which worked really well. V fun.

58 Motocross Madness 2

After Flight Simulator’s successful return, I’m waiting any day for a 60-player Motocross game which takes place over multiple real world areas. Plain textures and everything.

59 Shenmue II

I got fired from my first real job in 3 days because the manager was a wanker. Anyway, this had just come out so I spent basically all my wages on this for the Dreamcast. I’m aware it didn’t have the level of detail that the first game had but it felt crisper and sharper and had duck racing. Weirdly the 3rd game is stuck incredibly far in the past. I mostly enjoyed the Yellow Head Building, which is really where the whole series should have ended in retrospect.

60 Celeste

A blend of so many aspects challenging and accommodating aspects wrapped up in one go. I do wish the added chapter wasn’t so flipping long though.

61-the rest

61 God Hand

I really wish the moves were a little more balanced. And there was less misogynistic behaviour. But outside of that, what everyone else said.

62 Barkley Shut up and Jam Gaiden

It’s my favourite JRPG and I’m sad the sequel never panned out.

63 Pilotwings 64

Good vibes and music.

64 Hitman 2016

This is what I imagined PC games would end up like when I was playing them in the 90s? Outside of the cutscenes. Everything is done so well and has tons of replayability. I’m not remotely good enough for top tier difficulty or even suit only runs but there’s still loads of fun.

Hmm… it looks like I’ve made 50 nominations so far (if I count the WarioWares separately). I’m too lazy to make write-ups today, so here’s another list for now:

  • Missile Command
  • Crystal Castles
  • Solar Jetman

And here’s some games I’m unfamiliar with, but I’ll use my powers to vote for them:

  • Burning Rangers
  • LSD The Dream Emulator

There. A nice, even 55 votes.
