SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE šŸ’€

I agree with most of ur points but imo one of the most fun things about from games is guessing which stuff was unused content from previous games, and I think it’s generally impressive how often they can reappropriate the tone of something in the new context. Dark 3 had a good amount of stuff that felt like it was from bloodborne, for instance

Between that and one of the loading screen messages about dangerous spirits as night falls, it really felt like fighting undead demons was going to be a much more important part of the game, and to see them shunted away into obscure corners of the game, where their difficulty pretty much remains the same from the beginning of the game to the end? That made them feel like content that should have been cut.

I just tried the final boss my first few times and got to the 3rd form w/spear and blade, no doubt it’ll be a good few more but honestly think I’ll get it within 20-30. Surprises and fuck ups guaranteed, it’s just the kind of setup I’m good at switching modes for on the fly.

Much will always be spoken on previous experience in the Soulsborne games and how it affects the player’s approach, intuit, and response to what Sekiro asks for. Listening closely to what it’s saying though (maybe also compounded by enough time with certain twitchier deep actions; again MGR: Revengeance, Ninja Gaiden for example)…in its own fashion, the richest thing here is combat and given a player’s effort to learn it, the team’s sharpest not necessarily hardest entry yet.

every video I’ve seen of the game on youtube had the english voices on. it’s just like witcher 3, nobody respects the material. english isn’t even selected by default this time!

Wait there’s an option for english voices??? Dark Souls didn’t have an option for Japanese voices

FWIW, the dialogue insofar as I can understand it is way more concise and evocative than the English subtitles. For instance, one line I took note of near the beginning translated the single word mamorubeki to a long clunky phrase like ā€œthe ward under his protectionā€. It’s kind of cool that DkS1 gave us really evocative dialogue that the Japanese audience understood in dribs and drabs but likely appreciated nevertheless, and now the tables are turned.

It has like 6 voice tracks. Maybe on my second run I will play it in Italian

French was the best sounding dub of the set besides Japanese

Shichimen’s also one of those weird fights where the playstyle is completely unlike the rest of Sekiro (given the strategy is to just rush them down and keep attacking without ever stopping). In general the thing I dislike about those fights is the Terror status. But while insta-death is annoying, it’s actually not anything worse than most of the grabs in the game, given most of those will typically cost you the same unless you’re at full health.

Also, regardless of whether the game detects you’re mashing or not is pretty immaterial given pretty much every person I saw playing the game on Youtube mashed through most of the boss fights (easiest way to tell is you’ll see them spam deflect a few times after a series of strikes is over), including most of those with 0 death or speedruns. The reasoning seemed to be that not getting hit was more important than the risk associated with being hit, at least until players that were genuinely extremely good at the timings (like speedrunners) memorized all the timings so they no longer needed to do this.

I’ve only played this game for about two hours (and haven’t read the whole thread), but the fact that I never learned how to parry in the Souls games is proving something of a challenge!

I think we should talk about if it makes sense to have both jump evades and evade evades. (oh, and especially since I’m dealing with this problem right now!)

4+ defensive options, as opposed to many offensive options, is a striking choice because they need to be selected within extremely compressed time windows and have more subtle evaluations.

This games got me in its clutches. im right in the ā€œcan’t wait to get out of work so i can go right back to playingā€ zone

i encountered the big snek and nope’d the fuck out of there but i’m psyched to go back and see what lies below…

The ā€œdeath blows restore healthā€ skill was a game changer thanks Tulpa for the recc. Also a game changer was realizing that i don’t have to sneak up on every enemy to get a stealth deathblow, i can just sprint up to most of em and mash R1. Zipping through areas i tiptoed through the first time and opening dudes up left and right is immensely satisfying

Wolf’s ā€œUMAIIIIā€ if you eat Kuro’s sticky rice ball in front of him is really cute.

I (as the official sekiro hater, I have embraced it at this point, the first two hours of this game betrayed everything I want from From) found the subtitles for the japanese dialog very dry compared to what I’d come to expect from the english delivery in their other titles (which has always been absolutely fantastic, even when it was Atlus producing Demon’s, well beyond almost any other japanese game I can think of), so I did try toggling it

i mean if the first impression left you cold there’s obviously nothing wrong with that, but it does make it kind of annoying that you keep popping back in with criticisms that are entirely your extrapolations from those first few hours

i’m also bewildered as to what your expectations of From even are if ā€œbeing initially confounded by obtuse mechanics & difficultyā€ are not among them

i just wanna pop in at 4 hours and say that i don’t like this game but i keep playing it anyway? and it puts me in a bad mood even when i’m successful??

maybe i just hate games now because Baba is kind of doing the same thing to me
