just learned about bothies, a concept in scotland. a bothy is a little cottage out in the middle of nowhere, miles away from the nearest path, let alone roads or other buildings. originally used by shepherds and similar people who worked in these remote places, they’re now used by hikers. the doors are always left unlocked, and are basically treated as public property on an honour system. so it’s customary that if you use one, you leave something behind if you can, like firewood or cooking gas. not food, as it could be months or years until the next visitor passes by.
