the distinction between “movies” and “cinema” is the most boring thing ever and it sucks that scorsese said “cinema” when he was (much more severely) categorically excluding them from the medium altogether
edit: also it is always interesting to see what filmmakers do post-marvel/star wars success with what must be a total blank check creatively, the russos are doing like… cop propaganda movies…?
and rian johnson, who is wholesome and good, is basically going back to doing the same kind of weird genre riffs he always did but with a cast consisting of every famous person you’ve ever heard of
I think how we define and/or use words regionally, has certainly muddied this conversation.
examples:
Film Vs. Movie Vs. flck Vs…etc
Movie (Theater) Vs. Cinema
I’m going to the movies I’m going to the movie theater I’m going to the Cinema
what a great film what a great movie what a great flick
I caught a flick last night I caught a movie last night Last night, I watched a film
The name of the place which shows these moving pictures, may or may not be indicative of the types which they show.
Apparently that “Cinematheque” has some artsy sensibilities. But a local theater in my home town is called “Deer Park Cinemas” and just shows whatever. A regular movie theater. Even though that word “Cinema” is in the name.
yeah i mean i don’t think comparing the movies to theme park rides is really all that bad? i don’t even know if it was meant to be like insulting. it’s a pretty interesting comparison.
This is a great interview btw, one thing I really hate about twitter screenshot culture is the way it chops stuff like this up. The whole thing is worth a read, there are more comments about Marvel stuff* if that’s what turns you on but also a lot about Parasite and his future projects too.
Because Parasite has made Bong Lords of us all, I’m most interested in speculating about what his upcoming English language film might be about. He mentioned it’s based on a real life event that took place in 2016, and that it will be shot half in the US and half in England. Any guesses…?
*For instance this comes right after the boxy costumes bit:
michael mann likes joker for the same reason he went and sat in tom noonan’s trailer in the dark for hours on the set of manhunter, he wants to be will graham
