The co-op and the multi are so good.
I’d say KL2 stands out for its abjectness which is kind of an odd statement when we really consider how abject a lot of game premises are. KL2 is also highly chaotic in that its major story beats and level design take on realism (not in the graphical fidelity sense) but in the sense of a world which doesn’t really care about the players or the characters, you are just thrust into a horrible series of events because of one initial inciting incident that never gets adequately resolved. It’s not even a series of events that has any deeper themes or meaning beyond ‘two white guys fuck up another country with little motivation’. If it’s not unique it is at least honest about its fucked-upness through its aesthetics and narrative structure.
it is that but disgustingly violent and mostly unenjoyable. at every point completely indefensible, and seemingly uninterested in ever justifying itself or the player. it’s a game that makes me feel sick and nauseous and I take that as being its quality?
note: I don’t actually remember how the game goes, but this is the takeaway of it I remember having
I don’t put too much thought into the Point of the thing I just enjoy crime and cop killing. If killing cops in a foreign country makes you feel bad you can kill more american cops and stave off an attempted capitalist coup d’etat in cuba in the 1st game.
I was in the same boat as you for a long time, I tried it in co-op and thought “this game sucks, it’s got bad shooting and i don’t like these characters.” I played it again like a year later and something about it clicked. It might have been because I was coming off of GTAV somewhat recently, and that game is like…what if Kane and Lynch were the good guys, somehow?? I fucking hated it. So it was kind of nice to play something that also hated that idea.
It was cathartic to play something so indifferent to me, and totally antithetical to identifying with the player character at all. I don’t ever want to play it again but it left more of a mark on me than almost any other game. It felt like a cleansing fire, in a way, burning off the GTAV stench.
Honestly, not playing GTAV or any of its ilk is probably better than playing Dog Days, but I can’t deny how prominent it is in my memories, unlike literally 99% of games I’ve ever played.
no yeah i mean, thanks as always for the well considered explanations guys but like. i get it. it’s not that im squeamish about shooting fake cops or dont grasp that it’s a violent unpleasant game about two bad people. i just don’t like it and didn’t find it fun. like i found that unpleasantness repellant, not engaging
i like dog days because it is willing to be fucked up and uncomfortable in a way that feels pretty honest for a videogame. it feels like a real thing. i think it probably wouldn’t be worth very much if it didn’t repulse a solid amount of the people who encounter it because it’s willingness to do that is critical to its successes
nothing good is for everyone
also it is just fun to shoot in that game, i love how you are less accurate than in like every other TPS
dogdays owns because of the naked desperation section but sucks because actually moving the guys never feels weighty enough
you set expectations with your character design io interactive
A Zelda game beating an SB sacred cow was too perverse a prospect to pass up and I think even Kane and Lynch could appreciate the degeneracy of such an outcome.
surprised at how strongly sm64 beat out ikaruga. I mean, I was on the fence about it, but I eventually did want to see ikaruga win, if only to have one beautiful stg move on
you can write 10,000 words about how important kane and lynch 2 is to you and the summary will always be “no no no no… it’s good because it sucks”
k&l2 has some lovely moments of harsh bloomy lighting and neat camera effects that aren’t deployed towards particularly interesting ends in terms of the underlying art direction and environments. nothing else about it is remarkable level design or writing-wise and all the ink spilled about how nauseating/abject/conceptual it is feels like marketing spin taken at its word about a normal dumb run of the mill fun coop shooter with some canned edgy background dialogue and a very lightly avant garde veneer. i still voted for it because those effects really are lovely and i wish more modern games did stuff like that (it reminds me a little of the main mission in ground zeroes actually, though that one is legit gorgeous and well-designed besides the obviously horrendous cutscenes at the end). i like when they’re nude in the rain but it’s no arsenal gear
i did mean to say the shakycam effect is legitimately neat, i’m pretty tired of that in film but it’s still got some play in games. I think it suits the “aw shit now what the fuck” feeling of the story and play extremely well
i think formulas got at why i just roll my eyes at people talking about the brutality of the game and how it makes it seem more honest and whatnot. it’s just violence. the crime men are violent, wowee zowee can you believe it. i think links awakening is a much better more offbeat story about how playing a videogame protagonist naturally leads you down a path of cataclysmic destruction to no real sensible end. link doesn’t even say “fuck” once and i still get it
kane and lynch is about two guys getting dealt a bad hand but they stay positive and keep at it every day, persevere and work together and finally achieve their dreams. uncharted is about a totally unrepentant sociopath unleashing violence on various countries
No. This is the most common Dog Days misconception. It is a mechanically excellent third person shooter and it would not work at all if it was crap to play
quite apart from whatever you may think about K&L’s other qualities, I’m never voting for a fucking cover shooter, especially in a bracket that just killed its only beat 'em up and only shmup
cover shooters are just debased rail shooters
